We have had the 2840 for over 2 years & have always had scanning problems. HP seem incapable of resolving this issue our IT guys are at there wits end. I have lost count of the times its been reinstalled. What I want to know is why HP dont seem to do anything about the problem.

1) Using the Control Panel on the printer, press the Spanner/Screw driver button.
2) Scroll though the menu until you see Network Settings & press ok.
3) In the following menu select Wireless LAN Setup.
4) Then select Advanced Setup.
5) Then select manual Setup & press ok.
6) This guide assumes you are connecting through a router via Wi-Fi, in which case you will need to select Infrastructure Mode and then press OK.
7) Select Search SSID & this will search for your wireless network.
8) If your wireless network is showing, make sure it is highlighted then press OK.
9) Now you will need to enter the encryption type, this will depend on the length of the wireless key. WEP 64 Hex (10), WEP 64 Alpha (5), WEP 128 Hex (26), WEP 128 Alpha (13). Any router that has 8 characters I would normally recommend selecting WPA PSK TKIP UNLESS you know that the key is WPA PSK AES.
10) Now you will need to input the security key depending on which type you have, as advised above.
11) Once the key is in correctly you need to press OK. You will then see a Confirm Settings screen. Press OK on this screen and YOU MUST WAIT 30 SECONDS for the printer to establish a wireless connection with the router. After the 30 seconds please go down to Confirm Settings and press OK. This will tell you if it has successfully connected to the router. At this stage you need to make a note of the IP address. This normally starts 192.168.x.x
12) On the PC the printer will need to be installed, I recommend downloading the driver from here:
13) Once installed go to Start > Control Panel> Printers (This will vary slightly depending you version of Windows).
Right click on the printer, select properties (Printer properties for Win 7). Select the ports tab and add a new port.
When adding a new port select Standard TCP/IP, then click add new port.
NB The Standard TCP/IP port is recommended when assigning static IP address to the printer. (See router documentation on assigning static IP address).
If using a dynamic IP Address I would recommend downloading and installing the Epson net printer port. You can use a Standard TCP/IP port, however when the IP address changes communication between the printer and PC will be lost.
Setting up both port types are the same, once you select add port you will need to enter the IP Address, which we noted down previously from the printer. Once entered keep clicking next, then finish.
You should now be able to print over the network. To use the scanner over the network you will need to open Epson scan settings, (a separate utility to Epson scan) this will need to be set to network and contain the same IP address noted down earlier for the printer.

If you still have issues check your firewall and router settings, i.e. mac filtering etc.

Brother mfc 9420cn unable to scan on display

Hi Alex

I'll hazzard a guess and presume you can print and copy OK, just get the message when you press scan.... is that right? If so then please tell me how it is hooked to your pc ie network or USB and if you previously have had this brother scanning to your pc and how you are trying to scan ie to a folder or email?

I ask because I'm thinking you are getting unable to scan message due to your brother not being able to connect to your pc, not because you have a sick Bro (printing uses different software and firewalls and anti virus progams dont interfier as they can do with the scanning process)

IYour PC and MFC need to be set up to allow comunication between the two and it is different setup if it is via USB or Network (blue cable) as your machine can do both (cn = colour and network)

Easiest way is to reinstall using your brother disk that installs MFC Pro suite or you can download it from brothers web but get the full package not just the driver..

Let me know answers to my questions and if I'm guessing right or if you need more info or help setting up the scanning software. I could be guessing wrong and theres a problem with the machine but if I am then it wont copy either as scanning and copying use the same parts of the machine just different parts of your software, and this is my trade and my guesses are educated even if my spelling isnt;);)

Regards
Steve

I am trying to figure out how to use my Brother MFC-8440 scanner. I would like to use it to scan documents to email out. When I go to Brother.com and look at the direction book, it doesn't have directions...

It is part of the Network User's Guide (section 10) and the Software User's Guide (section 3 for a PC using Windows, Section 8 for network scanning), not the User's Guide. The directions below are for XP and Win2K primarily. Slight changes may exist with other OS versions. (Full software is not available for Win7 so the buttons on the unit will not work. You will need to launch scans from the computer only. You can use Windows Paint or Fax and Scan without needing third party software. Then attach the file to an email either in the email software or by right clicking on the file and choosing Send to Mail Recipient.)

For either use, put the document face down on the glass or face up in the ADF.

If you use a directly connected computer, you need to set the destination for the Scan to E-mail in the Control Center (section 4-4 in the Software User's Guide). Open this program and make sure the correct machine is in the drop-down menu. This program needs to be running to hear the buttons being pressed. Click on E-mail to set which program will get the scanned document as an attachment for your e-mail. You can also set the resolution and type of attachment. If you do not want to use available file formats, you will need to scan in PaperPort (or other software) and then use that to attach the file to the e-mail. Then click Scan to launch the scan from the unit. Hit Set when ready to send.

If you have the unit set up on the network, then you can enter the LAN setup in the Front Panel (or a browser). Hit Menu 6 (and then the appropriate number for the next feature), such as TCP/IP, DHCP or Static IP (these are under 1), SMTP, POP3, Mail Address (Menu 6 2). Setup the Scan to email with Menu 6 7 1 for color and Menu 6 7 2 for black and white.

This automatically sends the item to the email server or PDF as either a PDF or JPEG. Then you need register the PC that will get the file to the unit, if you use scan to email (PC). (Your version of Windows will matter for exactly where the information is: Control Panel > Scanners and Cameras or Control Panel > Printers and Other Hardware > Scanners and Cameras.) Right click on the icon for the unit and select Properties to see the Network Properties box. Go through all of this set up including the Scan To Button. Then the Control Center will launch the e-mail program when it "hears" you press Scan, select Scan to Email, press Set, then choose PC and press Set again. (or select the destination PC which has e-mail access and press Set again). Scanning will start.

If you have set the POP3 and SMTP servers and the unit can directly access them, then you can scan to e-mail and enter the recipient address. Press Scan, select Scan to Email, press Set, choose Email Server and Press Set again. Adjust the scan quality as desired pressing Set at each step. Once you go through all of the layers, the LCD screen will prompt you for the recipient's email address. Then press Start.

    I hope this helps.

How can i hook up the scanner?

Hook the network cable to your scanner nec card on the machines, note that this machine has two nec cards, one for printer and one for scanner.
after that Go to the setting and under setting/Scanner Default create and ip address for the scanner. after you done from that go to the computer browser, type in the ip address, you can choose scan to smb or pc.
Scan to smb needs shard folder but scan to pc needs to run software on your computer on your pc.
Setup the sender list which you need to fill only the ip address of the machine as sender.
Go to destination setup the ip address of the computer you scanning to, the path is the shared folder name, and the user name and password of your computer and you good to go.

To make it easy for you, Provide me your email and i will attach the scanning manual to help you setup it correctly and you can always get back to me in any question.

I am having difficulty setting up the wifi function on the lexmark X6570 printer that I have purchased recently. I have installed the printer to the Apple Mac using a USB wire and it all seems to work...

Press the white settings button once. Then press the right arrow button 4 times ( next to the red x) The display will say network setup. Press the check mark once. The display will now say network setup. Press the check mark once more and the display will read print setup page. Press the right arrow button one time and the screen will read wireless setup. Press the check mark once more and you will begin the wireless setup configuration for your network.

    Lexmark 5400 series

Problem: Lexmark cannot retrieve applications list

I have the Lexmark X3550 with the WiFi option board installed (makes it same as the model X4550) and get the “cannot retrieve applications list” message on one of the five computers connected to my router (Linlsys WRT54G V8) and using wireless printing and scanning. Just like everyone else with a similar Lexmark WiFi printer/scanner, I can print wireless, but cannot get the wireless scanner to work on one of my PCs.

The fix, in my case, was to change the Lexmark network name as follows.

    1. Launch Lexmark Imaging Studio.
    2. Right-Click on “View or change network settings”.
    3. Enter a new network name in the first box shown. (This box contained the correct network name for my PC, but another name was needed to make the scanner work. I simply added “-lex” at the end of the current network name.)
    4. Right-Click OK. You should return to the Imaging Studio screen.
    5. Close the Lexmark Imaging Studio window. (The tray icon should remain at the screen lower right.)
    6. On the printer, press the Scan Mode button.
    7. On the printer’s display screen, select the Computer Name that you entered for the new network name. Just use the arrow buttons until the exact name is shown.
    8. Press the Check button. The display screen should show “Downloading Applications List”. Within about 10 seconds the message should change to “ *Scan to Computer ”. Wireless scanning should now work.
9.. Press the Start Color or Start Black button. “Requesting Scan” will be shown. After a few seconds scanning will start. The process is a bit slow.
    10. After a while you may see an empty small Lexmark window onscreen. Later, the Lexmark Imaging Studio will appear onscreen, then change to show many options and features. An image of the scanned item will appear in a Lexmark window. Save and/or edit the image. Another scan can be done by pressing the printer’s Check button again. Be sure the correct computer name is shown on the printer’s display.

That’s it. A new computer name was the solution. Your PC and printer may require a restart (power off) after changing the “computer name”.
