Question about Toshiba Qosmio G15 Notebook

1 Answer

Desktop Icons This computer starts normally and then when the desktop and GUIs or icons appear, every 15 seconds they all disapper and then reappear 5 seconds later. I have run an antivirus scan and discovered 4 viruses which were cleaned by the ESET NOD32 antivirus. Also have run a checkdisk, defragged the hard drive, cleaned the disk, tried various combinations on the start up but nothing helps. Any ideas. Thanks very much. robert.keaton@att.net

Yes, everything disappears except the picture on the desktop.

I have just done a system restore and it appears all is well for now.

If this comes back, do you have any suggestions.

    Thanks very much.

Do just the icons disappear, or is it the task bar and explorer windows as well? If everything is disappearing, then it sounds like explorer is restarting, which is almost always a virus. Although NOD32 is very good, you might want to check out 'hijack this' and dig for any stubborn viruses.

I believe it was a virus. If it ever comes back run hijack this (free) and have somebody take a look at the log. It will remove almost anything. You can also take a look at the task manager to make sure explorer, or any other program, isn't causing explorer to freeze and restart (it will be taking a large amount of memory or cpu usage).

Where are my icons

If you are in Windows and all your desktop icons have vanished, do the following:

On the desktop, right-click the mouse.
Select VIEW.
Look at the bottom of the list for the item that says
"SHOW DESKTOP ICONS". It should have a check mark with it.

If it does not, select it to get a check mark and your icons should reappear.

Zoom on desktop

Try Right Clicking on a empty space on the desktop and select Properties. Click the Settings Tab and go change the screen resolution. The higher the resolution, the smaller the icons. Normal resolution is about 1024x768, but you can make the icons even smaller by increasing the resolution.

If you can't get into the screen resolution that way, turn off the computer and boot up into safe mode.

Turn off the computer, then hit the power button to turn it back on and immediately start hitting the F8 key repeatedly until you see SAFE MODE. Take the Safe Mode option and let it boot up. Safe Mode will look different to you, the screen will be darker and the icons bigger, this is normal.

When the computer boots up click Start/Control Panel or Start/Settings Control Panel and look for Desktop or Appearance and Personalization.
Look for Screen Resolution or open the desktop and click the Settings tab. Make the resolution higher to make the icons smaller. Normal is 1024x768 but you can make it higher.

In Windows 7 just click Start and in the search box type: Screen Resolution. Look up at the top for the returned search results and click on Screen Resolution. Go in and set the resolution higher.

After you change the resolution reboot and let windows go into it's normal boot up mode.

No icons

To enable missing icons and more, right click on your desktop and choose Properties. Click on the Desktop tab and hit the Customize Desktop button. Next, under the General tab, check off any of the icons you want to appear on your desktop.
Once you do that, they will all be returned to your desktop in full view. You can choose from the icons of My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer. Now, on the other hand, you may want to take some of those icons off your desktop. If that's the case, just uncheck them and they will be out of your way
