Hi-

Chances are these large memory hard drive should be plugin with a USB and adapter of its own since 320Gb is too big and needs power to be able to recognize. But if you find it defective you have a year warranty from the manufacturer, you can call them up for a replacement.

Hope this help. Thanks for using Fixya!

Firewire usff 7010

If you're asking if a Dell OptiPlex 7010 USFF will support Firewire the answer is No...Unless you purchase and install a Firewire card

The OptiPlex 7010 USFF has the following external connections:
  • Front Panel: one microphone connector and one headphone connector
  • Back Panel: one line-out connector and one line-in/microphone connector
  • Network Adapter: one RJ45 connector
  • Serial: one 9-pin connector; 16550 C compatible
  • USB 3.0: Back Panel - 2
  • USB 3.0: Back Panel - 2
  • Video: 15-pin VGA connector
  • 20-pin DisplayPort connectors - 2
I don't recommend any USB to Firewire convertors but if you can find a Firewire Convertor PCI Express Card you can try installing it but remember the USFF has only one Mini PCI Express 52-pin connector, I've highlighted a possible product. It allows for Firewire 800 speeds. The included optional internal Molex power connection is only required if your Firewire device doesn't have its own power adapter

Hello, My name is James. I have a problem with my 2050 GB Toshiba External Harddrive(Cypress AT2LP RC42). My copmuter can't reconaise it no longer. Can you guys help me out?

Check the power supply. Re-install the drivers if applicable. Can you hear the hard drive spinning, does a light come on? Also try a different cable from the device to the computer. Go into Device Manager and see if their is some info there. Check the bus that it uses (USB, Firewire, etc) in Device Manager. If you know how, remove the hard drive from the case and install it on a bus inside the computer case. If it works this way you know the problem is with the external case or power supply.

My USB-250 GB toshiba unit is not showing up on my desktop

Sofia;
Try booting up the computer you want to use the device on, with the device plugged in. (also this external hard drive should be powered by your USB bus alone)
Let me know if this helps

I have a Maxtor One-Touch III 750GB External Drive that has worked well for over a year. This past weekend the icon disappeared from my desktop and I can't get it back. I'm running a MaxOS X 10.5.5 OS...

mine will also occasionally disappear. i have had to do a restart of the pc which gets it back for my 160 gb firewire external.
the blinking light may be indicative of the hdd going bad, though.

I cannot read my western digital external hard drive from my macintosh. Was there last week, but disapeared when I started my computer today. Any suggestions?

Unplug the power cord , have your computer boot completely then plug in your hard drive again.

This next bit is a bit unorthodox but as you plug in the power can you hear it spin up ?

if not i think that the power module inside the case is faulty

If it does spin up hopefully your macintosh can detect it now , im not to familiar with macintosh's but i think dirvers are apart of the windows world so either uninstall the drivers (if any) and reinstall if none check the usb or firewire cable is properly plugged in , if so check the usb or firewire cord works by trying it on another device or purchasing a new one and testing it on your hard drive.

If none of that works i suggest you get a replacement on warranty if the data on the disk is easily replaceable , if it isnt you can open the case, remove the hard drive and buy a external hard drive enclosure kit and use the hard drive in that.

Sorry i can't be of more assistance but the macworld is very foreign to me

Goodluck and please don't forget to rate :D

Firewire

firewire is a lot like usb in the power area if the drive is not getting power i would suspect the firewire port. firewire did not become very popular because of problems like these. You need to go down to a computer parts store and by a firewire card and that should provide enough power and bypass the on-board ports. Try to hook another device up to the firewire ports and see if they work if not install the daughterboard with firewire ports

Verbatim 250GB External Hard Disk not recognized by PC

Almost always, when a USB drive doesn't assign a drive letter in MY Computer the issue is a Mapped network drive using the drive letter the USB drive is attempting to use.

With the drive connected, open DISK MANAGEMENT find the USB Drive, right click it and assign it an available drive letter.

USB malfunction

Hello jaybear

The most likely problem is your USB bus is underpowered for supporting your external hard disk drive along with other USB devices.

First, this is actually a good thing in a way. The reason is, it is actually telling you right up front that your USB bus is underpowered for this device. That's a huge improvement over issues caused by underpowered USB buses in the previous model computers. In those, we were left to having to figure out what the problem was when a USB device inexplicably stopped or didn't work.

What is happening is, your new hard disk drive(s) (HDD) are trying to run off of power supplied by your computer's USB "bus" (circuitry). This is OK for USB devices needing low power. But in the case of external hard disks, it's "iffy" whether there'll be enough power on the USB bus to support even one of them, much less two or more. Particularly on laptop computers.
Have no fear. This problem is easily remedied. :)

You need only attach an A/C adapter to each of your external hard disk drives and you should be OK.

If that is not an option, connect a **powered** USB hub to your laptop and plug the external HDDs into the hub instead.

By "powered" I mean a USB hub that comes w/ an A/C adapter. In either case, using a powered USB hub or attaching an A/C adapter to your hard disk drives will remove the external hard disks' power load from your laptop's USB bus and provide sufficient power for the HDDs to run.

You can find USB hubs at Newegg.com and lots of other online high tech stores. I like Newegg because their prices are competitive, their customer service is excellent and there're customer reviews of most of their products there as well.

If you have any more questions, comments, observations - anything at all, just let us know. We're here to help.

Otherwise, PLEASE, take a moment to rate the solution that best addresses your problem. If the solution provides a "fix" for your problem, then a **FIXYA** rating would be very much appreciated. :)

Thank you
BJ @:)
