Best case, it won't power on. Other cases, it shuts off then on then off. Could also introduce noise into your audio signal. Another thing it will do pretty often is to seek a ground thru your RCA cables back to the radio and then "fuse" (read fry) your ground circuit in your radio for the RCA outputs. Worst case, it will do something bad to your amp. Most likely thing to happen if there is a bad ground is to zap your RCA grounds in the radio, and then it is time to take the radio to the shop to get some new ground wiring installed. Good luck.

Installed amp and offset light comes on, no sound out of speakers

  • You have a ground loop somewhere. You need to check where your amp is screwed into at and make sure it is not to the metal on the car itself. Check your Power and Ground wire connections good to. What's happening is your amp is generating unnecessary DC current. Find your loose or shorted connection and this will go away. The majority of the time you have a loose or insufficient ground connection.

Hi,

This problem is due to over powering the speaker. Amps have built in protection for both themselves and the speakers they are connected to. If you have the gain turned up too far on the amp, it can cause the amp to go into protection mode which will turn the amp off temporarily. You have probably noticed the speakers make odd noises or sound awful just before the amp turns off. Other issues may be that you have a bad ground connection to the amp. Check this connection at the amp and at the location the amp is grounded to. Follow the "-" or "GND" cable from the amp. if that connection is good, just turn down the "gain" dial on the amp about 1/4 and turn up the volume and see what happens.

I get power to my amp with the 12 volt and the remote plugged in. once i hook up the ground the amp well turn off. how do i fix this?

Something is seriously wrong! The amp should not even go on without the ground connected! If it is going on without a ground cable connected then there is an internal short allowing the amp to receive a ground signal. Once you actually connect ground, the amp is protecting itself from the dead short you have now applied to it.

My jl audio amp 500/1 keeps losing power or something because the bass goes on and off after i turn up the volume what is it ?

Sounds as if you might have a bad ground or other poorly connected power wires. When you turn it up the amp is looking for more power but it can't get it hence the amp shutting down. You need to go over your positive cable connection from battery to amp and also make sure you have a good ground. Also it depends on where you bolted your ground too. Did the amp not do this before and now it does or did you just get it and put it in and it's doing it. Try another amp if possible. Your subs might be bad also or running at the wrong ohms. This amp puts out the same wattage at 1.5 to 4 ohms. I think personaly you got a bad power connection cause the amp is starving for power when you turn it up. It depends on a few different reasons why this is happening. Last thing would be the power supply in the amp itself. I just need to know if it recently started doing this or is this a new install amp for you. Let me know so I ca further assist you.

When I turn the car on the amp goes into protect mode

A few things can be happening, the amp has a short somewhere, the amp is defective, or it may have a connection problem, wires connected the wrong way, but it is most likely a short somewhere, trace the power wire from the battery to the amp 12V+ connector and see if there is a short or if the wire is pinched, another way to find out is to get a test light, find a power source somehwere ( 12V+ ) and place the test light tip on the amps 12V+ connecter, thats the easier way if you are too lazy to trace, lol. If the test light lights up then you have the power wire grounded and you need to find out where and correct it., Also check the amp turn on wire it may be grounded or shorted as well. If this your solution please remember to vote and rate me.

Good luck my friend.

your inline fuse wouldn't blow if there was just something wrong with the amp. the amp fuse would blow if that was the case. something is faulty with your wiring. you probably have the wires touching somewhere or are in the wrong terminals at the amp or on the wrong battery terminal. or your power wire is grounding out somewhere. its not the amp. its your wiring

Thermal light goes away when ground added

Doesn't sound like anything is wrong. If the thermal light is on before you have the ground hooked up then the amp is probably getting a small amount of electrical ground from the shielding on the RCAs or its mounting to the chassis of the vehicle allowing the amp to "barely turn on" (not enough ground). I can imagine this would make the amp think something is wrong (ie: thermal light) . May I suggest that you do not try to turn any amplifier on without ALL appropriate wires connected correctly.

Rockford Amp - When grounded, both power and thermal lights go off

You shouldn't have the power wire connected to the amp without having the amp's ground terminal connected to a good ground. With some amps, it will damage the head unit.

Does the amp power up normally if you connect power and ground and then apply remote voltage (turn the head unit on)?
