GE JVM1430 over the range microwave/exhaust fan unit. The exhaust fan (not the microwave cooling fan) all of a sudden has its speed slowed down considerably. The unit vents out the back, not top. Turning the fan on, the speed is very slow and then may speed up for a bit then slow down again. There are 2 fan speeds and they both are very slow, the slow speed hardly spins at all. Pulling the unit from the mount found there were no dirt, dust or blockages. Removed from the mount, the rotors spin faster, but still too slow. Putting my hand in front of the fan exhaust and increasing resistance seems to speed it up. It almost seems like an electronic control is bad. TIA

Sounds like a strip down of the fan and lubricate the bearings with sewing machine or thin cycle oil will do the trick.
Hope that helps.

Spontaneously stops working and then comes on after 5 minutes. Why?

Sounds like the magnetron is overheating. There is an automatically-resetable thermal circuit breaker attached to the magnetron. Most likely your problem is caused by either a cooling fan that is not running, or is running too slow (caused by gummed-up bearings). In some over-the-range (OTR) microwave ovens, the exhaust fan is run at a slow speed to cool the magnetron, and if it's bearings get gummed up, it won't run on the slow speed. But if it's a new OTR microwave, then the exhaust fan may be pointing the wrong way. (It is rotatable, depending on the installation). For example, if it is pointing up, but you don't have an exhaust vent over the microwave, then the air has nowhere to go, and the magnetron will overheat.

How can I get the fan to turn off when the microwave is turned off?

Most GE over the range microwave ovens have a cavity heat thermostat. if the exhaust fan cut on due to external heat generated to oven, the fan will run until unit totally cools down. in this case unplug unit. Also fan can run if you have a broken door paw or if one of the door secondary switches is bad.

I have a GE Spacemaker Microwave DE68-40861A that has a built in range vent. The fan motor blows just fine, but there is no airflow. Apparently this was installed improperly. What would be blocking the...

take microwave down. There is 1 screw on the back that hold fan in. Pull screw out and the fan will lift out. Roll fan so that opening of fins faces to the front. set it back in put screw back in and remount microwave.

There is a clattery sound when microwave is on... it doesn't happen when the vent fan is on... only when the microwave is on

Could be the turntable motor, the magnetron fan, or the motor for the stirrer motor.

try turning off or disconnecting the turntable motor to narrow it down.

GE Mircowave JES2251SJ -

The internal magnetron cooling fan is located behind the control panel assembly.

When I say internal cooling fan, I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn on and off manually.

I'm instead talking about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you microwave.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

GE JVM1870 Spacemaker Microwave Fan Malfunctioning when Cooking

There are two different fans in this model, as with almost all over the range microwaves.

One is the hood vent exhaust fan, which you can turn on and off at will, and which should always be on when cooking on the stove top.

This fan does not automatically come on when you cook with the microwave.

The fan which should always be on (automatically) when you are microwaving is the internal magnetron cooling fan.

If the cooling fan fails, the magnetron can overheat and the thermal cutout (TCO) / thermostat will open, killing the power to the oven. Ideally, this protects the magnetron from being destroyed.

If the thermal device is a thermostat, it will reset when it cools down, and the oven will work.

If the thermal device is a true thermal fuse, it is a one-time device and if it blows, it will have to be replaced.

If your cooling fan is bad, it needs to be replaced before using the microwave.

Fan/Light

We see this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide for $39.95 postpaid.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk
