Well the best way would be to buy a junk X7170 online like at ebay or bidtopia and take the parts you need out. this is a lexmark all-in-one printer there are not a lot of parts for it out on the market yet. but sionce these things do break a lot you should be able to find a junk one easly.

What kind of glass is used for copier platens? I can replace a broken one myself if I can get the right kind of glass.

Try ordering the glass from the parts department of the manufacturer. That way you'll know the glass is the correct type and size.

Scanner glass has broken into many pieces, do i need 2 buy a new printer??? or can i buy glass replacement???

I would contact HP support directly (here) to ask about this.
Many HP printers have and encoding strip on the back side of the glass, like an IPC, that the scanner must read in order to complete alignment. Without it your printer could be disabled.
So I would be hesitant to replace the glass with ordinary glass, unless you saved that strip from the underside of the old glass.
I'm not sure whether this applies to your model, but just to be safe, check with them.
Good luck.

How do you take the scanner glass out of the Hp psc 1610?

How to remove the glass panel from the PSC-1610:
  1. Pop the button template piece off.
  2. Use a Torx T-10 driver to remove the screw at the bottom of the button piece.
  3. Lift the button piece away and let it hang by the cable bundle.
  4. Remove all 7 T-10 screws.
  5. On the back, gently pop the 3 plastic tab holds.
  6. The glass panel should lift off.

The glass for the scanner broke, i need another one

Eek, that's a tough call.

I think the cheapest would be to take the measurements and have a local glass company cut it to size.

I've never seen a manufacturer offer replacement glass tops for their scanners. The model isn't listed, but it's probably going to be cheaper to either buy a new one or buy a broken one off ebay and take the glass out of it to use in yours.
