GE Profile Range on the fritz - HELP!

By pandamama - usenet poster

Hello Handi Folk,
I have a GE Profile gas range (JGBP79) and the oven suddenly tired of
heating up. Top burners work fine.

This has a bake and broil (below and above) burners in the oven each of
which has an electronic igniter (no pilot) which appears to be a heating
element itself (not a spark igniter like the stove top burners)

Does anyone know if (and where) there is a fuse for the two igniters or
other reason for both burners to fail at once?

I suppose it's 'possible' that I've been surviving on the upper (broiler)
burner only, not noticing the oven being slow to heat and so the problem
'could' be the igniter(s) but at $68 each +shpg  (on the GE website) I'm not
eager to experiment.

any more plausible theories?

Many thanks in advance

Martin

You might call around the appliance parts stores in your area and see if
they have the repair book for this stove? cost should be about $15, well
worth the price.  Ask the people there what is the price for the parts
you want and how to test it, they answer alot of questions like this all
day long.

The ignitors work independently , make sure the broil wont work.
If the broil works on"broil" it is probably the bake ignitor.
Since the upper (broil) ignitor and bottom (bake ignitor) went out
at the same time, it is doubtful that the ignitors are bad.
That leaves either the thermostat or the gas saftey valve.
If your handy with a volt/ohm meter you can check for voltage at each
component, if you have voltage to that component and it dont work,
its bad.
Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

I had a GE oven suddenly quit on me. I called the GE number and they said to
'reboot' the oven by unplugging for 15 minutes. I was skeptical, but I tried
it and it came back to life!
hope that helps
