IBM Selectric II

My typewriter types fine for a 1/2 page and than the letters start getting off line. They either go too close together, or below where they are suppose to be.

Thank you

When you turn the platen by hand is there a ratcheting noise?
If not the ratchet release lever may be in the wrong position or not engaging the platen. orthe spring for the detent arm is broken if it's not the lever you probably need a tech.

My IBM Selectric II typewriter skips part of a letter when typing envelopes and going over the overlapped thickness. Even repeating the letter doesn't help.

That particular key is not hitting the paper flush as it should. Carefully try adjusting it in the direction of the miss.

Selectric II Pitch-shift lever won't change from 12 tom 10

If you haven't changed the pitch for a long time the lubricants dry up, if you have some WD40 spray it in the slot inthe margin bar where the L. & R. margin levers ride. Give it a few minites to work.

Ibm selectric II typewriter prints a different letter than the one typed. the typing ball appears to be very sluggish.

By this time in thier life selectrics have become very gummed up which causes many many problems, you need a chemical cleaning and lubrication. It may be cheaper to buy an IBM Wheelwriter on EBAY.

MY IBM SELECTRIC II TYPES THE WRONG LETTERS. I CHANGED THE RIBBON, AND THE CORRECT TYPE. WHEN I PUT THE ELEMENT ON, IT STARTING TYPING THE WRONG LETTERS.

Not good. You probably turned the element while removing it and if you are lucky had it come off one of the pulleys, but more likely it came off the wheel under the element. Then you will need a tech.

My IBM selectric II typewriter carriage stuck in right margin

Sounds like the return lever arm is not putting enough pressure on the return clutch, or the clutch is slipping. The exp key uses the same clutch but the pressure comes from your finger. Theres no way you can fix this yourself. Get an IBM mechanic.

IBM Selectric II Will type letters, but will

Several possible causes. Needs lubrication most commonly. Sometimes the velocity cable is hung up on the left side and under the carriage. remove the ribbon and shine a light down on the left side and look for a cable hung up on the pulley, make a hook with a paper clip and lift the cable up and past the pulley

IBM Selectric II typewriter stuck in correcting position

If you know how to remove the right dust cover (black inside the T/W below the carrier) next to the R. side frame is the correction set up mech. spray some WD40 on the arms especially where they pivot, they should free up.

Typing close to top of ribbon

I aqssume that the top of every third letter is missing. There is an adjusting screw under the L. ribbon spool howerer you need a very small spline wrench to a make. it.

IBM Selectric II won't return completely

The machine is probably gummy. If you know how to remove the case do so, get some WD40 and spray everything that moves espesially the stuff on the outside of the rt. side frame.

Correcting IBM Selectric II Typewritter correcton ribbon won't engage

Selectric I and II type elements are identical (88 char) where Selectric III uses a different element (96 char). The 88 character element will have white lettering and the 96 character element will have yellow. Directly underneath the lift-up tab to remove the element will be a 3-digit number. That's the last 3 digits of the element's part number, which will be preceeded by 1167 for 88 character, or 1352 or 96 character. For example, if you have a '052" stamped on the element, and it's an 88 character style, the P/N will be 1167052.

The correcting mechanism is an intricate additional function of the backspace function. To test it/adjust it/or repair it requires the machine be hand-cycled using a hand cycle wheel which is screwed into the right hand side operational shaft. It's unlikely that an un-trained party would be successful repairing this..
