Old hp printer won't print anything with new hp desktop computer

I have an old hp printer, 656c series with a new hp desktop computer, hp model a6403w and I can't print anything. I've installed and changed printer several times and run the original printer installation disk, and still nothing. I don't even know if I have the printer connected to the correct port on the back of the tower. I can't seem to find that info anywhere either.

I went into control panel and uninstalled my 656c printer. I then went in to uninstall the program that might have been installed with the original CD, but there wasn't any program for any printer. Next, I turned the printer on since it's supposed to be "automatically detected". Then I tried to print up your solution to my posting and an error came up saying there is no printer installed. I clicked "add a printer" and 2 choices appeared. One was for "add a local printer" (only if user doesn't have a USB printer) and the other was for Bluetooth, etc. Maybe I don't have my USB cable plugged in?? What does it look like?

Your PC has VISTA loaded (according to the HP web specs)

This printer has no specific driver for VISTA but basic functionality is supported by VISTA without the need to load a seperate driver.

refer HERE

The printer connects via a USB cable to the PC and should be detected automatically by VISTA whe the printer is turned on.

The original CD would have drivers for an earlier vesrion of windows (98 or XP) so you should uninstall any programs that were installed offthe disk.

    Here ya go

The flat end goes into the PB and the more square (ish) end should go in rear of printer.

As soon as you plug it in power on the printer and windows should detect the printer and install the driver. You should hear a "ding" or 2 to advise that a new device has been detected on the USB port. you should get a couple of "balloons" pop up in the RH bottom, first will be found new hardware the other should be something like "new device installed and ready to use"

    Post back results please

You may be able to download a Windows 7 printer driver from the HP WEB site.
If there isn't one available then HP considers this printer too old or incompatible with Windows 7.
You can download the HP printer drivers from their supportWEB site. Please click on this link and select your model printer to download:-

I installed hp 660c driver from internet for my hp 656C printer for windows 7.My printer is working paper coming out with printig style but actually not printing the pages even ink level is ok.more over...

I hear you loud and clear, I have a HP OfficeJet wireless E709n I bought a couple of years ago and now it will go through the motions of printing but really saves on ink and paper it don't print nothing but blank paper. Apparently it's and older model printer,3-4 years old. That considered stone age to HP.If you can't the driver listed I would go to your search engine (I use google chrome) but what ever you use just and just type in "Find free driver download for HP Deskjet 656c InkJet printer" and search the web, it's out there somewhere. Also have you checked your print head in it? mine was clogged beyond belief. Use hot water at about 150F to soak the head in and a small paint brush with windex to clean them. Just in case that is your problem, it wasn't mine. I was told by a HP tech that I had some corrupt files in my computer that weren't telling the printer to put down ink. Yea, there's a file for that to, it tells the printer to charge the print cartridges. They have to have a small electrical charge on them in HP for them to work. I know a secret place to look for drivers, I remember it doesn't have my printer naturally but has a ton of deskJet printers. Let me look and I'll get back with you within 30 minutes and let you know if I find it. If I can I'll put you on it's trail,

I am trying to install my printer to my laptop with Windows Vista and the laptop says it is ready. I click print and nothing happens. The software details say that I need to upgrade to Windows 98, NT, or...

I think that the printer driver that you installed in your computer is not a driver for Vista. I checked the supported operating systems and it's compatible with Win 2000 upto Win XP.

BUT, I saw this on a site:

Supported software
Windows Vista HP Deskjet 656c Printer driver utility.

Meaning that there's is a possibility that HP has a Vista driver for your printer. You need to contact HP and ask them where can you get the Vista driver for your printer. I had a feeling that it's the only way that would make the printer work.

Have a great day!

HP deskjet not printing in vista

have you got the latest drivers, or is your driver for windows vista? Maybe you can try reinstalling your drivers using windows vista drivers for your printers. you can go and see if these drivers fit your printer at HP's site:
