SOURCE: Ryobi Electric string trimmer

TJ, I've had the same problem since yesterday and I found the solution (lots of googling - that's how I found your post BTW).
It turned out that the switch malfunction is a common problem.

The part number for the FA3-4 switch is:

ut41002a-36 ("switch assembly")

Available here (thru Amazon):
http://factorylawnandgarden.com/product/553902/B000PLVCX8/SWITCH_ASSEMBLY_UT41002A_36/

It's a Homelite part, which is identical to Ryobi.

Here is the manual showing it (part 6):
http://www.m-and-d.com/pdfs/ryobi_tool/RY41002.pdf

Here is the thread with the solution:

I'm taking this Ryobi weed eater back to Home Depot, getting my money back and I will not be buying Ryobi again.

Not a bad decision, all in all. Maybe get a gas job. All of the posts concerning electric trimmers on here show ME how problematic they are, how cheap they are and how prone to failing they are! Maybe get a cheap gas job? With proper care and maintenance, these units can last several years.

I believe my Ryobi 12 VoltBattery Line trimmer need a new battery

First, check to see if the charger is working properly. To do this, recharge the battery for about 15 minutes. Then check to see if it now runs the trimmer. If so, then you have a bad battery. You can go on the WEB and find a replacement. These batteries or sensitive to heat and cold. When storing, try to place it in a comfortable environment. Sorry for your loss. If it still under warranty, check with the Co.

My ryobi trimmer keep flooding. It has a Walbro carb #wt539 in it.

The most likely possibility is that the carb needs rebuilding. Just cleaning may not help. Gasgets go bad over time if fuel is left in the trimmer.

My Ryobi 15" ElectricTrimmer ZRRY41002 Not Operable

I was thinking about purchasing this product from Amazon sometime soon (today being 4-26-2008).  However after reading of the above problems I am not so sure anymore.  However I did find a discussion about this problem at the Ryobi forums at" http://209.235.218.9/dc/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=112&topic_id=597 ".  (If the link does not work go to " http://209.235.218.9/dc/dcboard.php " and do a search for " 597 ".  One of the displayed threads will be entitled "weedeater problem?"  It will have the proper link to the discussion.)  From multiple postings in that thread it appears that the switch is the problem and it seems to be a consistent problem for many users.  The switch itself can be replaced for less than $4, however the shipping seems to drive the cost up to anywhere from $12 to $15, unless one can find a local supplier.  I hope that this helps.
