I recently downloaded the new map update that everyone with the nuvi 200 is having problems with on storage. I fixed my storage problem (deleating foreign languages that I didn't need) but I ran across another problem: My nuvi 200 won't use the new map updates. I went through all the map instillation processes and my computer screen said that my GPS was ready to use this new update. However, when I tried to search for an address in Winnipeg, Manitoba (in Canada), my screen only showed the basic highways and freeways leading to and going through the city. It didn't show any of the city's streets, avenues, buildings or anything like that. So I was wondering if I was just hallucinating when I saw that Canada was included in this package, or if the maps didn't install correctly. (sorry for such a lengthy post)

Download and install the Garmin commuicator plugin to your computer http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/ This will allow the nuvi to transfer data back and forth to Garmin's server. Connect your nuvi to your computer and run the Garmin WebUpdater to update the software on the nuvi. Download and Install WebUpdater. To update the mapping, you will need to purchase a map update subscription. https://my.garmin.com/maps/chooseDeviceType.htm? Once the subscription is activated and registered to the nuvi, follow the download instructions to download the map. This will usually take from 3 to 4 hours or more depending on your internet download speed. The nuvi 200 is a discontinued model and you may want to consider upgrading to a new GPS as a new nuvi with lifetime mapping can be purchased for about $150.00. http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-nuvi-1390-lmt.html

There's only one way to update a garmin satnav without risking destroying it. You can find details of how to do so at http://www.fixya.com/support/r5628920-update_garmin_satnav_maps. To do a once off update will cost in the region of 80 euros. To get a lifetime update will cost around 140 euros. The price varies depending on the map you want to download. This is for the lifetime of the satnav rather than your lifetime.
The nuvi 200 is a discontinued satnav, even though it may only be a few years old, and the problem with it is that it probably won't be able to hold the complete updated map. This means that you'll have to download only part of the map e.g. if you have a map of Europe you may have to settle for Western Europe or Central Europe etc. You can download the whole map to your computer and install the remainder to an SD card. However maps on an SD card rarely work with the nuvi 200.
So it depends on what you want. If you want the complete map it may be better to go for a new satnav and try to sell your old one to cover part of the cost. If you only use the satnav in your own country or state you might be happier to just update and settle for part of the map. Some new garmin satnavs come with free lifetime map updates. They can be identified by the letters LMT at the end of the model name. Of course you're paying for them in the price of the satnav. The problem with the new satnavs is that in 3 years time or so they will also be discontinued and outdated and the full maps will probably not fit on them either.
Press Tools, press Settings, press Maps and press Map Info. The map name should be displayed with a tick beside it to show it's selected. If there's no tick press the map name and the tick shoule appear. This should solve the problem if the map is installed correctly.
Yes, you will need to download the webupdater program from Garmin to get new maps for your Nuvi 200. Transfer the files to your SD memory card and then plug that SD card into your Nuvi 200. Click on the link below to get started
You can update the maps using either Garmin or other third party maps. The accuracy will depend on how old the mapping data was that is used to create the map. So you want to find out if the map in that area is recently updated. You may also find that a regional map may show the details in some areas where a larger map won't.
To upgrade using Garmin you just go to garmins website
You may find the map update is free or you may update for a fee or get a lifetime update subscription. The gps is hooked up through the usb cable and will download and instal the updates. It's painless (sort of ;-]) and quick.
The error message you are receiving about maps is actually a sign of a firmware corruption problem, which just happens from time to time with electronic devices. Updating the firmware of your nuvi will replace the corrupt firmware.
steps to take to update your Nuvi 200:
The Garmin GPS are among the easiest to use and they have the most complete mapping on the market. To update the mapping, there are several versions of the software integrated into these road gps. To name a few, city navigator version 8 and City Navigator 2008. With a newer version, you have the most recently built streets, new shops, new parking lots, etc.. To update, there are several ways to proceed. First, before you update your maps, I recommend you check if there is a newer version of the maps, visit garmin and download the plugin. You can also view the maps version directly on your gps.
Map updates are free for units which are recently sold with the older maps and the new maps have been published, ie you just bought a unit in 2009 which still had 2008 maps on it after the 2009 maps had been released. Rather than recall all the units from the store shelves, they offer free updates on the mapping software. Continually updating the maps on 18 month old units is not free, there is an update charge. What is free from Garmin is the unit's software. Hope this clarifies your assumption.
Garmin.com should have anything you need to help you get going. You can download map updates or new maps altogether and save them to an SD card to load onto the device. You should be entitled to one free map update with your new device if you have not taken it yet. You can also download manuals as well; their website is pretty loaded with information and I have had good luck dealing with them.
