It would help to know "exactly" what the error message states, such as "The USB Device Not Recognized" or something like that. Here are a couple of things to try in order to narrow down the problem source:
1. Try a different USB connection on the computer. If that one works, the problem is probably that other connection port.
2. If none of the ports work with the printer, try a different USB-powered device, such as a cell phone and charging cable. If it works, the problem lies with the printer/computer connection (more likely the printer).
3. If none of the USB ports work, the problem might be your USB port itself. Go to "Device Manager" (in Control Panel), then look for "Universal Serial Bus controllers." Check to see if any have a disabled symbol. Check under "Properties" that device status is: "This device is working properly." If not, try updating the drivers (under the "Driver" tab).

a usb expansion port would work. its likely however that the pins in the damaged port are shorting out, try to look into the port and move any pins apart that are touching
when you plug it in does anything come up? If not then go ahead and try different usb ports and see if its read by any of them. If none of your USB ports read the magic jack and you know the USB ports work cause you can hook other devices to them then that means the magic jack is bad and would need to be replaced.
If none of your usb ports are reading any devices then that means the motherboard is bad at that point.
