Washer not spinning or draining

By scottymoose on Jul 16, 2008

" "
I have a Maytag front loading washing machine (model number MAH2400AWW) Our washing machine has stopped spinning and draining. It happened in the middle of a wash, the error code was nd. All we get now is a loud hum but nothing else works. I have read some trouble shooting info which might suggest that the problem might be a frozen pump pulley or the motor is gone. We have a Maytag repair guy coming in 2 days from now and he charges $300/hour. The damn washing machine cost us $600. I have removed the back of the machine to have a look... the belt is there, intact and spins easily. Your help would be appreciated sooner than later.. $300.00 / hr is a lot of money to pay out if its something I can fix myself

- I flipped my washer on its back and got at the water pump from the bottom. The pump was a the top right corner and was very simple to unhook the 2 hoses to find a nickel had clogged the pump.

-   Qtlee, I have the same problem and tried the steps you have outlined. How did you remove the front panel on the washer. I removed 2 screws behind the soap dispenser, however I was unable to get at the screws behind the top control panel. How does that control panel come off so you can get at the screws behind it? I noticed one white screw on the right side, however, that would not allow the control panel to come off. Thanks-   wegocanoe

-   Not a Neptune, but this sounds like a problem common to most washers - mine being an old Maytag Fabri-Matic. I read that the door closing switch should be checked first to make sure it is clicking, or else no drain and no spin. Mine works so I will proceed to the pump as others before me have done in search of strange new worlds populated by frozen pulleys, bad belts, and Klingon clogs. -   karlihui

-   we have the same nd problem, but it will spin, but no drain. we are in a rental, and the dryer is attached to the top of the washer (stackable). we are looking for a solution where we can get to the pump without having to remove the dryer from the top (if possible), cause we have a toddler and can only take apart the appliances while he is sleeping at night :) THANKS -   cpandbc

-   Wow, Scottymoose, thank you so much for your post. I had the same problem with my washer. After wasting 2 days waiting for A&E to NOT show up and fix the machine (that was another pain in my behind), I decided to do some research hoping to find a solution myself. Your post really helped me. My machine also displayed error code "nd", and the machine just sit there with a loud humming noise like something is stuck. The steps I took were similar to yours.
1. lower the drain tube in the back of the machine to drain out the remaining water. Shut off the water supply to the machine and unplug the power cord.
2. remove the top piece
3. unscrew the face plate
4. remove the bottom front piece. There are no screws holding it in place.
5. removed the big front panel. The rubber piece around the door need to come off from this panel. It is easy to remove. There is a thin metal ring holding the rubber piece to the front panel. Remove the 2 screw where the door hook into to lock. The door doesn't need to be removed from this front panel.
6. the drain motor is in the bottom and front right of the washer (when you look at the washer from the front).
7. remove the culprit (it was a hair pin from one of my tenants).

My washer model is actually the Maytag front loader MAH2400AWW.

$300/hr??? i thought sears/ae was high..remove front or back pump is located more toward rear and may be easier to acess..front comes off by removing the door hinge screws and screws on opposite side roll vertical sides out and front will drop forwaed and lift off at bottom pump may just be plugged if all else fails cancel maytag and call sears or a&e

Same problem.  Water wouldn't drain, no trouble codes, door wouldn't unlock.  When the Rinse and Spin cycle or Drain cycle was selected all I got was a growling humm from the pump.  Clued in by the above postings I pulled the washer away from the wall, tipped it back so it leaned against the wall with the bottom fully exposed and removed the plastic panel covering the bottom (underneath - 4 screws) of the machine.  The small pump was just where these postings said it would be, top right of the bottom opening. Disconnect the two drain hoses from the pump. Mine were connected with hose clamps that I removed with just my thumb and fore-finger.  I had two quarters AND a nickel lodged inside the pump and was able to coax them out without removing the pump. Replaced the hoses and bottom panel, tipped upright and I was back in business - didn't even have to unplug (Its never a bad idea to do so) or disconnect the water hoses.
  • Total time spent: including searching for these posts and random dead-end trouble shooting - 1.5 hours.
  • Tools: 1 Phillips screwdriver.

Had the same problem and thanks to the postings here I went straight for the pump.
I wasn't lucky enough to have a nickel stuck in there - it was a quarter.
I had to take the pump out and take it apart to get the quarter out.
As the posters said here, the pump is easy to get to and also easy to remove
with only four screws holding it to the washer chassis.
Now how a quarter got in there is anyone's guess.
Also, I happened to remove the lower front panel (snaps on and off) under the door.
Found more documentation and troubleshooting tips probably meant for a service repairman.
I'm sure I saved a bunch of money on this. Thanks!
