My UMAX 2000U won't work under Windows XP.
It lights, seems to scan (with a pronounced crack at the end of the scanner
bed) but there is no preview image - it returns a solid black image (with
B&W) and a solid blue image with color.
Using VistaScan but have also tried Ulead PhotoExpress and the default
Microsoft scan utility with same result.
System:
AMD 1.3, AOpen AK73 Pro A, Via drivers 4-in-1 4.37a, GeForce MX400 video
using nVidia XP detonator 23.11 drivers.
Any ideas?

I upgraded to XP with a similar scanner - with succes.
You have to download and install a file called vs355u.exe with driver first.
Afterwards you must run an updater called 2xxx_XP_upd.exe. Both can be
found at www.umax.com.
So far I had luck.
BTW - would you like a better scanner software than the weak Vistascan? It
is possible - but also a bit complicated - to use the much better Umax
MagicScan with our scanners. See how at this site:

The built-in Windows Xp drivers are incompatible with the transparency
adapter. Disconnect it and it will work. The transparency adapter is
the cable that runs from the lid to the scanner and it has a ps2 type
connector in case you didnt know.

Hi, I have been experiancing the exact same problem except I am still using
Win98SE. It used to work fine. However, I rarely use the scanner and as you
may know that the lamp is always lit, (no on/off switch), so what I did was to
disable the scanner completely with the "MSCONFIG/Startup" program by unchecking
the UMAX Vistaaccess box. when I needed to use the scanner, all I had to do was
to enable the UMAX Vistaaccess again and reboot. Its been about 4 or 5 months
since I last used it and now it gives me those blank scans. It also makes that
"crack" noise when the lamp reaches the very end of the scan just like Bob's
scanner. Also one more thing I noticed was that the lamp does illuminate but it
is very dim compared to how bright it used to light up. Does this sound like a
power supply or the lamp itself? Note: I have had the scanner for at least a
year now but I estimate that I have scanned maybe 100 documents/photos at the
most, so this scanner has very low milage on it. Any suggestions?????
thanks,
Pete
