I've heard that some of these new external hard drives need more power from the USB port to run them.

If your running this on a desktop workstation you might want to consider upgrading your USB card to a newer model that can run more current through it.

Make sure you have an external power supply for it as well.

For Microsoft Windows distributions there are several options use an empty harddisk with a greater volume than the drive that will be read out where the data from must be collected. it can be a great job, most times you will have succes by that software .

This can sometimes happen with new drives if the formatting isn't compatible. I would follow the instructions on this site: http://www.top-windows-tutorials.com/format-hard-drive.html to reformat.

My hitachi hard drive Hitachi HDT721064SLA380 isn't detected by computer and i can here a sound "tic tic" in the HDD ,Thanks .

Hi Welcome to Fixya!
Your hdd is making that sound mainly because it could already be damaged inside. That is also the reason why it is not being detected by the computer.
Same thing happened to me with my 120gb Seagate Barracuda.
Consider in replacing the hard drive on your computer.

Hope this could help!
Have a great day!

WD WD1200B008-RNN not recognized by laptop/desktop

I had a similar problem with some other brand of external drive. I disconnected it without being stopped and then nothing would recognize it. It was new when this happened, I contacted the manufacturer and they sent me a files with software and instructions to recover it. It was not that easy since I'm no computer geek, it took quite a while but finally the drive worked again. Info was lost since I had to formated it, can't remember exactly is low level formatting but alive again.
Also try to go to my computer icon on the desktop and right click, go to "manage" there you'll see an option for disk management, there you might be lucky and make it work again.
Hope this helps, regards.

The device Generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later

why not try to use a separate program to safely remove the drive.

download here

Can you help me please

Thankyou for your reply SirDrag, I have tried the above, my daughter is helping me from her end, we are going to try disk director suite to see if it will pick it up, and units light comes on and I can feel it going, but it does not register on the PC, it says new found hardware on the laptop and nothing comes up. It does not show anywhere. We will try the disk director and see what happens, or I might just have to send it back, my daughter thinks that it might have to be formatted.
Let me know if you have any other ideas, again thanks

Drive mysteriously went from 250GB to 55MB!?

Hi, It would seem that the LaCie(300770) 250 GB Hard Drive would need partitioning and not only formatting to be able to recover the missing space. This is better explained by Microsoft Support . Alternately, you can right click on "My Computer, click on Manage, click on Disk Management, right click on the Lacie drive and delete its current partition. Ok or Apply, Windows may ask you to reboot. Do the Disk Management again. If the Lacie's original/erroneous partition has been successfully deleted, it will now show as "Unknown Partition". To create your new partition, right click on the unallocated space (black stripe on top), click on "New Partition" on the menu. To format, simply right click on the Lacie and click on Format. As a matter of choice, I prefer to use Partition Magic and/or Seatools for Windows. If using any of the above method and the Lacie will not partition/format or errors keep on appearing, it may be that the Lacie is no longer usable as a whole. Hope this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
