Re: disk read error no recovery cd
The BIOS is hard wired into the motherboard and contains all information about the hardware on M/board.usually accessed by pressing del key or f2 key you will have how to do this at the bottom of the boot up screen read all info carefully it should list what your hard drive is and how big also if hard drive is automatically detected if you access it set it for default loadings and try again to boot

you could run the check disk utility click start run type cmd then type chkdsk/r/f which will scan for and attempt to repair any bad sectors and automatically fix any corrupt files on your hard drive then defragment your hard drive or control panel administrive tools, computer management ,disk management right click on your drive select properties click tools you should see click check now click start two boxes automatically fix files and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors place then a tick in both boxes then select check now, start should schedule this task when restart hope this helps
Incase you don't have any thing important on the computer try a factory restore. This will wipe out everthing and make the cmputer like new. To start it power off the laptop. Power it on and hold down ctrl and tap f11 severl times at the Dell logo screen. Try this q couple of times as it may not work the first time. If this does nothing you'll need the os cd (xp cd) tO repair or reinstall windows.
put in the windows 2000 or xp disk
98 is not supported by microsoft , youll have many problems online
but you need to format the hard drive , 20 gb is good
with the windows xp cd boot from it
you will see just one letter drive if more delete them and format just one drive, you can use the quick format , so the windows xp files will go on after that, but youll have 30 day trial
I dont know which computer you have but some computers have a built in Partition that has a Recovery and can be accesed when you turn on the computer and can do a recovery that way without using the recovery cd's. It all depends if we are talking about windows, or vista or sony, hp, dell , toshiba etc. I can tell you that if you just want to use your recovery disks it will erase all the personal data on your computer unless you back it up before hand, If you dont care about the data you can put the cd into the cd-rom and when the computer boots either press ESC key or F12 for Toshiba / Dell or F10 whichever is the CDROM boot key. Depending on the model sometimes the BIOS default is set to boot off cd rom and you wont have to press anything. After that you can follow the prompts for recovery it should be user GUI (Graphical User Interface ) Friendly.! Hope this answers your question.
