I have the same problem - suddenly the lens will not retract, power switches off automatically after a series of beeps.

Bought the camera in 2004 and it has worked fine until this past week.

I changed batteries and this made no difference.

Yes, same E18 problem. I did the following and the problem has gone away but for how long? With power off I removed the memory card. Powered on and startup was normal except for the message 'no memory card' - to be expected. Powered off and lens closed correctly. Replaced the memory card, powered back on and all ok now. Turns on and off correctly. This procedure was with the slider switch on the back of the camera in the upper (picture taking) position. Fingers crossed. Disgraceful behaviour by these arrogant manufacturers - they're never interested to help.

E 18 problem

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

This error is caused by a faulty lens motor, contaminated transmission, or mechanical damage from dropping. Unfortunately, there is no easy fix for this and it requires service from Canon or other repair facility.

the E18 means the lens system has a problem. I had it with my S2 and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Eventually it stopped working. The only solution was sending it to repair, they changed the lens system.

Best Regards
