Goldstar Window A/C Unit Model GWHD5000

Hello :-) I recently moved into a duplex that was built in 1930 and the A/C is provided by window units. The small unit in the bedroom is a Goldstar Model No. GWHD5000. I have never lived in anything like this duplex before, so I've always had new apartments with central heat/air. My question (concern) is how much it's costing me to run this Goldstar unit constantly "on" since it has no thermostat and does not cycle on/off automatically. Is running ths type of unit the equivalent of keeping a blow drying running 24/7/365 or the equivalent of running central A/C "on" 24/7/365? I need some idea of how much ENERGY this is consuming (costing me) and I'm starting to panic about the cost, but I live in Texas - it's 100+ degrees EVERY DAY so turning the unit off is not an option because I have two cats who stay in the bedroom all day while I'm at work. Please help if you can :-) alexandra.mitchell@lycos.com or mobile 214.695.7865. Thank you!!

I recommend that if you have animal and you want to have the unit on all day that is fine if you have an ac unit with a thermostat and it is big enough to handle.  The unit that is in the window is ok if your home but it could cost alot if there is no thermostat because it will run and run and run.  Then if it don't cool the house enough means its not the right size.  The unit / compressor could overload and kick on and off and might not work when you get home and the house will be like a firecracker.   Best bet would be to replace it with a unit for the size needed for the apartment.  It would be effecient. if we can help further just let us know.

Loud rattles in front fan and loud hummiing from unit itself along w minimal cooling and freezing up

Unfortunately sounds like the squirrel cage in the front may have broken off at the hub. This is a pretty extensive job on most window units, not all that costly (parts wise) but quite a lot of labor.

The water condensation seems to be flowing into the room damaging my floor instead of to the outside. What can I do?

the outside lower edge of unit must be lower than window sill.use a level or place a ball on top of unit &see which way it rolls.it should roll right off to the ground.adjust how its mounted.

Air conditoner model gwhd5000 goldstar does not cool

Hi, first you will need to know, what type refrigerant,(freon) your a/c used, if you need to add freon, there's a leak in your a/c. you will have to find and repair leak, before you can charge/ add refrigerant(freon) . automobile a/c can be easily recharge (add) to system, but your window a/c unit, has the same principles but different approach, if you don't have experience, you will have to call mechanic, make sure you have a freon leak, before calling mechanic, plug a/c on let it work, put hands close to a/c, feel or check temperature of air blowing out from a/c, make sure compressor is working/running, fans could be working/ but compressor not, also put a/c thermostat to max, your model no. GWHD5000. means your unit is 5000 b.t.u, (british thermal unit) measurement of heat transfer, am wondering if a/c is to small for your space/room. making you think it needs freon, 5000. b.t.u. is for a small space, like a room 10' by 10' like a storage area or small bedroom, keep bedroom door/windows shut. measure you room/space/area , the bigger space/area needed to be cooled, has a chart, maybe you can find it on internet, any way a 10.000 or 12.000 b.t.u a/c is better buy, for normal room/space etc. so check compressor especially to make sure working, a/c could be to small for space/room, check it at night to see if it's colder. don't try to put gas/ freon yourself, could be very dangerous. but before calling mechanic, check those thing, mention before, could be your a/c are to small, for space/room etc. remember before attempting any repairs, disconnect power. good luck.

GoldStar model GWHD5000

Make sure that the unit is properly mounted in the opening (I take it it's in a window) and that it is level or at least not tipping inward as in the outside being higher than the inside. If unsure about how to mount it properly, consult your owners manual. Your installation should be reasonably close to the illustrations.

Not getting cold anymore

Unit has probably lost its charge of refrigerant.

Check for warranty, or buy another one.

Usually they are not worth repairing, sorry

Cooling motor shuts on and off...

No it is not normal. You might have a bad capicator to the motor.
Is your unit still under Warranty? If so. Call the service center.
