Usually just dirty
the xbox has a **** drive, installed in a stupid location next to cooling air ports, and it is usually placed on the floor, dust heaven. the drive can be cleaned by a directed jet of air through the partly opened drive door. The slot in the middle of the disc tray defines the laser lens location. compressed air in a can is available at pc stores, or the blow jet of a vaccuum with a piece of fishtank air line to reduce the flow is sufficient.
dont open the case, the seals need to remain intact or MS will not repair the red ring of death failure when it occurs

I put my brand new disc's in and it wont pull up the game as an option to choose in my xbox, it simply says open tray, so i open it, put the disk in, then close it. the xbox then says reading, and quikly...

Sometimes that means that the laser is bad, but most likely the Firmware board on the Disc drive has gone bad. You can purchase replacement drives but you need to be sure and use your Firmware board, because it is married to the motherboard of the Xbox. A repair like that will typically run about 70-100 dollars depending on what drive is in your system.

My xbox is not reading any of my discs. it just reads open tray. when we close it again it says reading and then goes back to open tray. can you help?

Hi,the most common reason for the Games not reading discs is a bad drive. The following website sells the drives and does installs:

store.richspsxparts.com/wiiredvddr

This drive should fix any reading issues you are having with your games, or issues inserting your games or ejecting them (or lack thereof). This is the entire DVD drive assembly mechanism replacement for your game including a new laser. If your discs are not ejecting, or you cannot insert a disc -- or you can insert a disc but it will not load, this is what you need to get your game going again!

Take care.

open tray right??

-check the time and date settings, even the time zone as well
-try to load the disc without the hard drive or memory unit
-look for corrupted files at the memory, delete it
-do the system maintainance,
system settings>>memory>>hardrive, press y for device options, press this in sequence x, x, Lb, Rb, x,x>>yes

Xbox Disc Tray Loose

If you are comfortable with taking apart your system, I would advise taking the case off and then finding the dvd-drive, removing the case on that and simply tightening the screws on the tray. Don't tighten them too much, but make sure they are snug. Then test to see if it still wobbles and it should be fixed. If you are not comfortable with taking apart your system you will need to find a repair shop that can do it for you.
Please rate, thanks!
