Transfer all files from my old desktop to new laptop

you can do that by following the steps below;
Instructions
  1. Step 1 Connect your laptop to your desktop through a home network connection. If you have a home network, you can hook up your laptop to it via an Ethernet cable or a wireless network card. Then, you can set a folder on your desktop computer to be shared across the network. To set a folder as shared in Windows, simply right click on it, select "Sharing and security," select the "Share" tab and check the box labeled "Share this folder on the network." You will then be able to access this folder from your laptop and transfer files to your.hard drive.
  2. Step 2 Purchase a USB jump drive. These handy devices are the size of a key but can store five gigabytes of files or even more, depending on the type of USB jump drive you buy. Insert the USB jump drive into your USB port and your operating system should find it as new hardware. If a window doesn't automatically come up, you can find in your drives under "My Computer." Then, you can click and drag files into it, remove the drive and take it to your desktop computer and access the files there.
  3. Step 3 Put your files onto another external storage device, such a CD, floppy disk or external hard drive. Files are transferable between any computers as long as you can store them on something external, then use that external device to move them to the other computer.
  4. Step 4 Email files to yourself. If you only have a few files that you would like to transfer and don't have any of the equipment used in Steps 1 through 3, send yourself an email with the files attached, access your email from the other computer and download the files to your hard drive.

Transferring data from old computer to new computer

If its connected to the internet email the files to yourself and then save to your new computer. If its not online, you could try taking out the hard drive, make it a slave in your new computer and moving the data from one drive to the other then take it out and good to go.

Windows Vista doesn't recognize cable

XP & Vista require different drivers to run hardware devices.
Visit the Vista compatibility site to determine if your hardware is compatible, by clicking here,
or visit the manufacturer's website to see if there are updated drivers and firmware available for Vista that you can download and install.
Another possibility is to visit Windows Update and run a custom scan with the cable attached and see if you are offered a hardware update for your system that would make it work, but this seems unlikely in the case of a cable...
Good luck!

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take a moment to kindly rate this post....thanks!

Just trying to restore back to factory settings

take a genuine microsoft windows xp / vista install disc and put it in the drive. Reboot the system and boot off the cd. The windows setup will start. Delete the existing partition using the wizard, then install windows to the blank area.

Everything on the laptop will be wiped out, replaced by a blank installation of windows xp / vista.

If you don't have one, you'll have to buy or find a copy.

I purchased a new hp laptop with windows Vista. My old laptop has Windows XP. On my old laptop in Microsoft outlook I have all my clients files in a section called contacts. How do I transfer this onto...

You can click on your Contacts tab or button in Outlook and then go to the File menu Import and Export. Next choose Export to a file. Next under create a file type you should probably choose second option of Comma separated values(Windows). Next choose window make sure your Contacts are highlighted and click Next. Now you should name the file and choose to save it to a flash drive if you have one. Click Next and then click Finish. Just take the file you saved to your new laptop and go to your Contacts and choose Import and Export again. Choose import from other program or file. Next choose Comma separated values(Windows). Next locate where you have saved the file. Choose to allow duplicates or not. Click Next. Make sure Contacts are highlighted and click Next. You should be able to continue now to you see Finish. Hope this helps.

Installing Problems

It's a hardware incompatibility with windows vista. for example your graphics card on your Inspiron might not be fully supported in windows vista and your Laptop's graphics card is supported by Vista. Most of the times we can find this incompatibility is with graphics cards. Download and install the newest drivers for your inspiron's graphics card. I have seen your inspiron has an ATI Radeon X1300 graphics card. The windows Vista drivers can be downloaded here http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=vista32/common-vista32
