Is the battery door maybe not closing tightly, causing the metal area that touches the tips of the batteries to not be in close enough contact with them? This happened with my camera due to a cracked battery door, and until I can afford to replace it, I've put a rubberband around my camera over the little door to hold the batteries in tightly! Surprisingly, this is working for me! I know it's not an optimal fix, but thought I'd offer the suggestion. (You didn't say what make/model your camera is.)
Pull the batteries out and see if it will stay closed, if it does the batteries are installed incorrectly. If it still won't stay closed your options are to either tape it shut or get a new camera unless it is under manufacture warrenty still or you have an accidental damage plan.
Mine is broken also. There are 2 tabs in the cover and 2 raised slots on
the camera body. When you open the battery compartment, you are
supposed to slide the lid forward releasing the tabs from the slots,
before the cover pops open. If you don't do this, you ~will~ break the
tabs (or the raised slots). Well someone who didn't know this got a hold
of my camera tried to force the compartment door open, breaking the
raised slots that are part of the camera body.
Take a close look at yours and figure out how this latch is supposed to
work and then see which part is broken. If it's the tabs on the door
you can buy a replacement door online (do a search) and have someone
good with electronics install it. (requires soldering). If (like me)
it's the slots on the camera body that are broken, then it's not
repairable. The original parts are too small and flimsy to be repaired
(designed to fail). My best idea is to find some other way to latch the
door closed. I've tried a velcro strap but it doesn't hold the lid
tight enough and I've looked in hardware and craft stores for some kind
of latch that might work, if I could atach it to the outside of the door
somehow, but haven't found anything suitable (it would have to be small
but sturdy and attach to the thin plastic of the door)
I'm thinking of taking it to a jeweler because they work with very small
parts and might have something that could be screwed into the plastic
door and camera body.
If you know of a better fix, please let me know.
I know this is an old question, but when I had this problem I came across several forums that had the "tape it" or "drill a hole and screw it shut" solutions. Some even gave step by step instructions on taking the camera apart and replacing the battery compartment with one from a camera bought for parts. I even contacted Fujifilm for an estimate. All were either expensive, ineffective or damaging. The solution I came up with was to go to the Camera Exchange and buy a Quick Release plate used for tripods. One that was long enough to cover the battery door. It screws into the tripod mount on the back and holds the door closed. No damage, no hole drilling and it works. Also only cost me $8. Win!
