Question about Olympus VN-3100PC Digital Voice Recorder
Suddenly stopped working for no apparent reason at all. Only had it for 2 months.
"ERR" message on screen. When batteries reinstalled 'CHK" appears before "ERR" message returns. Nothing works and recorder is not recognised when connected to computer via USB.
Hours of recorded music would like to retrieve.
I have the exact same problem as the other guys. When installing the batteries, I get a CHK flash then immediatly after that, an ERR message. This does not change if I replace the batteries.
I fought with this machine for more than 9 months. And after playing with it today FINALLY got it working.
This is what I did:
Unscrew the faceplate. (Three screws. One is under the batteries).
Put the batteries back on.
Have the HOLD button on the normal position (down)
Press and hold the MENU/FOLDER button together with the STOP button
Press and hold the MENU/FOLDER button together with the DISPLAY button
You will see a GREEN light, then a RED light then a "FOR" message will appear
Press the DISPLAY button and after a few moments it will reset and ask you to enter the time.
GOOD LUCK. Let me know if it works for you.
HAVE A NICE DAY.

I had the same problem with my Olympus VN-5000. I found a simple solution, which appears to reformat the memory (ERR means memory error). Press the STOP and DISP/MENU buttons at the same time for about 2 seconds, and then the display should show "FOR". It will supposedly erase the whole memory, but will at least make the device usable again. There is no need to take the device apart!

Don't give up hope !
Over the years I've had a couple of Olympus digital recorders & they both have given me the two error messages. Either 'err' or 'chk'. Sometimes the recorders will give you one message, then the other, or will simply give you one message either on constant display or blinking. I believe you can 'reset' any of the Olympus digital recorders by a combination of holding down two of the front keys. I sat for a half an hour & then suddenly one of the combinations worked. You can try the 'stop' key & the 'erase' key or the 'stop' key & the '-' (slash) key or any other two keys on the front. I have no guarantees that all your data will or will not be erased ! When I got the blinking 'chk' message on 11-4-08, I believe I pushed & held both the 'stop' & the '-' keys. Try ALL combinations of all the keys if those don't work. Don't give up !

Solution: as i have found...
remove the 3 screws from the back of the recorder
1 is beneath the batteries
Remove the face plate
and press down on the thin layer of film stretching over the function keys with the batteries in it
Once you mash the air bubbles from the film the recorder will work once more... this worked for me
maybe it'll help you out
check it out gentlemen, i'm sorry that this web site sux and doesn't give a solution to your problems, you'd think because we went out and purchased this product with our hard earned cash that we'd get a logical explanation when something malfunctions on the product but i understand if that is asking to much... WHY would I want to pay however much for this product and then pay some website for the solution... this is simply puzzling... i'll bequiet now

The ERR message can only be corrected by holding in the DISP/MENU and STOP buttons for two seconds, which results in all the material on the recorder being erased. It will say (FOR) for a few minutes while it is erasing everything, then will work again. Solution found at http://www.amazon.co.uk/Olympus-VN-2100-Digital-Recorder-microphone/dp/B000V3NTEU
