UGGH!!! i Had to pay to fax stuff today at Staples!

My brother 5440CN give me an "out of memory" error when i try and fax anything. The web site instructs you to turn off the FAX storage and/or print faxes that are stored but when i go there it says "no document" and the fax storage is turned to OFF.

Other than that it works fine but i am about to throw it out the window!

I have the same problem, I called Brother Tech-Support last night, they said they are aware of the problem and that the only way to clear the memory is to leave it unplugged over night. I unplugged mine for 9 hours and got the same out of memory error, maybe I didn't leave it unplugged long enough. I will try to unplug it for a day and let you know how it goes.

Same problem. No stored faxes; advanced fax options turned off; tried unplugging for maybe 10 mins. Has anyone have any luck with the unplug overnight suggestion?

I found it to occur with only certain documents. Some that have graphics and colors will result in this problem. The resolution auto changes to "photo". When I send a plain document, or just black and white, its ok. Go figure.

Brother Tech-Support told me to leave it unplugged over-night. I unplugged mine ant 12:00 pm and plugged it in at 9:00 am the next day and it still didn't work, maybe you have to leave it unplugged longer, try 24hrs.

To print fax send confirmation report:

You can use the Transmission Verification Report as proof that you sent a fax. This
report lists the time and date of transmission and whether the transmission was successful
(OK). If you choose On or On+Image, the report will print for every fax you send.
If you send a lot of faxes to the same place, you may need more than the job numbers to
know which faxes you must send again.

Choosing On+Image or Off+Image will print a section of the fax's first page on the report
to help you remember.

When the Transmission Verification Report is turned Off or Off+Image, the Report will
only print if there is a transmission error, with NG in the RESULT column.

Can't send fax. Getting transmission verification report stating NG: poor line condition/ out of memory. HELP!!

There are two possible reasons why your printer display the error message.

1. Poor Line Condition
- electrical interference on the line -Make sure electrical or electronic appliances do not interfere with the printer's phone line
- poor line connection - If you have a phone try connecting it directly to line outlet. Listen to the dial tone, if you hear noisy and static, then you will need to call your local telephone company cause there is a problem in your phone line. If dial tone is clear and stable then try checking the telephone line cord that you use to connect your printer from the line outlet, replace if broken.
- alarm system or another device on same line, these interferes with transmission / reception of the fax machine. Try connecting the printer all alone and then try sending a fax.

2. Memory Full
- There is no space to store incoming fax messages. Delete all stored fax messages.

When we try to fax, the transmission verification report reads NG: Poor Line Condition/Out of Memory

Is the fax on a dedicated phone line, or have are you sharing the line with another phone and perhaps a ADSL filter?

Hanging extra devices off of the same line as your Fax can cause the signal to weaken.

If you have extra devices hanging off one line, then remove all of them, then try to fax again.

Dialing out to fax papers. Reaches the number but instead of taking the fax it prints out a report saying: transmission verification report -- NG: Poor line condition. I have never used this fax machine...

Perhaps you indeed have lots of interferences on your telephone line, or the recipient does.
It is also possible that the unit has been set for a different telephone line standard (for some other country) - check the manual for relevant settings. If you don't have a manual, go to Brother website and download one.

Just because you can hear fine when you call the same number and talk to the person there, does not mean a fax machine won't sense noise on the line. A fax machine is much more sensitive, and cannot have a lot of noise or it will not be able to render the image at the other end correctly. So have your phone company and the recipient's phone company check the lines for problems.

There is also the chance that the two fax machines cannot get along. We have clients that we cannot use our fax machine for, because it always generates a similar error to yours. If we go to the other side of our building and use a separate fax machine on a different line, it goes through just fine.

The other half of the error is out of memory. If you have not tried these ideas, try them also: To gain extra memory, you can turn off Fax Storage, print fax messages in memory or cancel a Delayed Fax or Polling Job. In general, shutting the unit off will purge most everything out of memory.

Fax not sending

It sounds like you have a problem with your phone line. If your machine has a reciever, pick it up or press the hook key. You want to listen to the dial tone. If there is any static in the line it will cause faxc problems. Also you can try disconnecting the fax and plugging in a standard phone into the wall jack. Make a phone call and aee if the line is clear or if there is static. If you do hear static in the line, first try replacing the phone line cord, from the wall to the fax, or phone. If that doesnt help then it is definatly a problem with the line and you must call the phone co. If the line is clear with the standard phone, and static with the fax reciever, or hook mode, then you may have a bad modem board in the fax. Let me know if I can be of further help! John
