Check to make sure the DNS settings on the second computer match that of the first one or that the DNS settings are being set up by DHCP. Also, open a dos prompt (start, run, CMD enter) and in that prompt type PING 192.168.1.1 or the ip of your router... compare the results on each pc and if the second one indeed gets a slower ping time I would first try a new cable, followed by a different port on the switch/router and if that still does not solve the issue, try a new ethernet card in the second pc

The netgear router installation will set up the internet connection during install.
Download the Router driver from netgears website and install on the computer/s then your up and running.
it appears you wireless card is seeing the router so just install the drivers and your set.

Cant display netgear setup page

  1. Decide on a Netgear router. There are a number of router offerings, and prices and features differ depending on the model. Choose one that meets your needs and fits your price range.
  2. Step 2 Purchase a Netgear router, looking for the best price possible. Consumer electronics shopping sites like NewEgg and TigerDirect often offer good deals on clearance, open boxes or shipping (see Resources below).
  3. Step 3 Place the router by clearing a space on or under a desk. The router should be located centrally to reduce the distance to clients and assure better connections. The location will vary depending on how it will be used. For example, it shouldn't be placed in the corner of a basement if wireless clients all over the house will be using it.
  4. Step 4 Set up and plug in the Netgear router and wait a few seconds for it to boot up. Since the router is essentially a mini-computer, it won't work instantly when it's turned on. While it's booting, the power light should flash. When it's finished booting, the power light should stay solid.
  5. Step 5 Connect a computer to the router, either with a wireless or a wired connection. Reboot the computer to ensure it gets a new IP address from the router via Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).
  6. Step 6 Open the web interface by entering "http://192.168.1.1/" into the address bar of your web browser. If a login screen is presented, use "admin" as the username and either "1234" or "password" as the password.
  7. Step 7 Connect to the Internet, if necessary. Plug your cable modem or DSL modem into the router's WAN port in the back and run the Internet Connectionmag-glass_10x10.gif Setup Wizard from the web interface.
  8. Step 8 Follow the directions and provide authentication information.
  9. Step 9 Connect more clients. At this point, clients should be able to connect and access the Internet.

GoodLuck ;-)

on your computer try to reinstall the device driver for wireless. try to connect the ethernet cable directly to the computer. if you have internet access, then most likely your netgear router needs to be reconfigured. you need to contact your internet service provider or router manufacturer for the reconfiguration of your router. mostly likely the security settings of the router needs to be changed.

I think someone is crashing my netgear wireless, how do I make it secure so that onlt I can use it?they are slowing my bandwidth and I have not invited anyone in!

make it secure by,

access the netgear router configuration page (you need to do this hardwired)

1. check your IP address, click start -> all programs -> accessories -> command prompt
2. in the black box (command prompt) type in ipconfig and hit enter
3. look for the value of Default Gateway (that's your routers IP address)
4. open an internet browser and go to that address

for more detailed instructions, visit www.netgear.com and select your router model and choose supports & downloads

I have a netgear w602 but no installation cd to install it on computer and im stuck lol

You really don't need to install anything on the computer for that router, it has it's own controls built in.
You need to be able to connect into it, to configure it.
So for example, have the router on, have your laptop on.
Look to see if your computer "finds" a wireless network (you'll get a info notice in the lower right corner).

One question I forgot to ask
Do you have a wireless network card in your computer?
The router is a transmission station, you need a wireless NIC to be able to connect to it.

Computer will not recognise netgear router through ethernet port

1) Make sure that the router is correctly plugged in.

2) Power the router down, wait a few secs and then
turn it back on.

3) Hardware reset the router to factory defaults, there should be
a small hidden button to do this.

4) Check the LED lights on the router, and on the back of the
computer's network card (or connector) to make sure the
router is actually communicating at the physical layer.

Check for a bad cable.
Make sure that you are using the correct CAT cable,
not an uplink cross-over.

5) Open up your WEB browser, and if your home page comes
up, then your done.

6) If not, type the router's default IP address into the
Browser's address line and hit GO button or press return.

Typically this address is: 192.168.1.1, if not, check the
router's manual.

7) If the router's setup page comes up, the router is
communicating and all you need to do is setup
the router's features and settings. (see router manual)

8) If the router's setup page does NOT come up in your web
browser, the router is NOT communicating.
------

9) Check your network ICON on the task bar if there is one,
does it show full connectivity ?

10) Got to: START --> ALL PROGRAMS --> Accessories -->
Command prompt.

11) In the DOS-like command prompt window, type:

ipconfig /release <Enter>
ipconfig /renew <Enter>

ipconfig/All <Enter>

12) Check the display. it should list all your network settings.

13) You should see the network card's brand name,
Physical MAC address in the form of 6 pairs
of hexadecimal digits (48 bit address)

14) You should see your computer's IP address in the
form 192.168.1. (some number between 2 to 255)

This address should be assigned to your computer by
the router using the DHCP protocol

15) If ANY of the above checks fail, run the network setup
Wizard:

a) go to the control panel
b) double click on NETWORK SETUP WIZARD

c) Select my computer connects to the internet using
another computer or a residential gateway (router)

Choose DHCP, not a static address

This should do the trick

Your computer should now be configured to accept a dynamic
IP address from the router using DHCP

Open your WEB browser, type int the router's default IP address,
login into the router with a default factory password, and
set it up based on the instruction manual, or call the router
manuf's tech support line for help.

Good luck

Martin

P.S.
If your router does not provide DHCP services,
which is very unlikely, you may have to consult your
router manual on how to set up a STATIC IP
address, but I have never come across this
problem with any modern router. The dynamic address
should work.

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Control Protocol,
whereby your computer sends out a special packet
requesting the assignment of its IP address from the router.

Netgear WGR614

First thing I did with my Netgear is this.
Plug in the dsl/cable modem to the PC directly. Then install the driver on the cd. If you are one of the unlucky types like I was, the router didn't come with a cd. Try going to Netgers page see if they have a driver. Most are basically auto install. Try this before you check the netgear site though. Plug in the cable/dsl modem to the router and the pc to the router. Resstart everything. This includes the modem, router and pc. When it pops back up, try seeing if that works. if not, try opening up Internet explorer. Type this in to the url. 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0
That should bring up the netgear setup page for the router. If it ask for a password, the password on mine was
username - admin
password - password
It has an auto configure tab so click on that and that should automatically take care of everything for you. Let me know what happens!
