Yes of course. The latch system is designed to keep it from cooking with the door open.

If the latch is broken, it will not activate the door switch, which is used to tell the oven it is closed.

We have critical safety & disassembly info (including a how-to video) at our site, linked here.

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

Please write back with your brand and model number if you need further help.

We're happy to help you and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

tip

Maytag MMV4205 door won't stay shut.

After tearing apart my microwave, I found a little spring broke off the latches. Open the door to the microwave, pop off the plastic piece that the latches on the door go through. You will see a spring behind the latch. If the spring is not connected to the latch it won't operate properly. The spring was held onto the latch with a tiny plastic piece that broke off. An easy solution instead of buying a new latch is to heat up one side of the spring without burning yourself and melt it through the latch piece where it was originally connected then put everything back together.
Hope this helps,

Door will not stay close

Not much data to go on here. The latch on the door has a spring that holds it down in the locked position. when you pull the handle the latch goes up and you pull the door open. You will have to take the door apart and see if the spring broke or the plastic tab that holds the end of the spring is broken.

Pushed in spring loaded latch on the microwave. Need to pull it back out. Spring is not broke.

No, you don't have a new problem to fix, and consider yourself and anyone else that uses that microwave lucky.

Depending on where that crack is you need to know that the screen like structor in the door is actually a choke to stop and microwave energy from escaping, including anything around it. They are designed to stop any stray microwave energy from leaving the microwave. This could harm you so if it is anyware near that door choke, if I were you I would order another door. The same goes for the gasket around the inside of the door it to is a choke.

You are also causing yourself some potential danger because the door must never be circumvented to keep the light on or off because if you should accidently start the microwave then you will have problems.

Panasonic inverter door won't shut, light stays on.

Thanks for the tips - here is what I did (my wife calls me the Canadian McGuyver!) After taking off the plastic frame (using instructions in Solutions noted above) I used the metal part of a key ring and hooked one end to the spring and looped it around the thick finger/protrusion at the bottom. _197.jpg

The door will not latch

The latch head (with hooklike projections) have a spring to keep it pulled down. If the latch head can be easily pushed up and falls back freely, then the monting tab on the back of the latch head is broken and it will have to be glued or replaced. The new part is better. To get to the door screws inside, you have to remove the choke cover, as shown in the photo. You can order parts for Sharp models from Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com.
