My hard drive burnt out. The hard drive test says failed and the operating system won't boot. I placed a leftover hard drive from my Playstation 3 into the laptop and now it says no operating system found....

Try the recovery console from a windows xp recovery/install disk:
To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:
1.Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
2.When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3.Select the operating system you want to repair (you may have only one option).
4.When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5.At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation. From here I would try "chkdsk /r" and "fixboot"
For a list of commands that are available in Recovery Console, type recovery console commands or help at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
For information about a specific command, type help commandname at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
6.To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
Once you've done this restart the computer and see if it boots up.

My 2 year old stepped on{or dropped } my Dell xps m140 and cracked the screen. I thought I would replace it myself..Before I do, I hooked up an external monitor to see if it still operates properly, well...

This error is also cause by the hard drive storage of your pc notebook, if you know how to locate the hard drive you just have to remove it for a while and then put it back, some loose connection of the hard drive cause the problem, if you find it still not working, you need to repair the system startup of Windown XP it is corrupted that's why it wont start.

Before attempting to check the physical parts of your notebook, try first to check and recover the Windows startup system.

In windows startup repair you can use the Windows Recovery Console.

Source: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

Here's the step to start in Recovery Console:

  1. Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD drive and restart your computer. If you are prompted, select any options required to start (boot) from the CD.
  2. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts. Select the repair or recover option by pressing R.
  3. If you have a dual-boot or multiboot system, select the installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console.
  4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password.
  5. At the command prompt, type Recovery Console commands, and then you can refer to the commands that are listed in the "Available commands within Windows Recovery Console" section.
  6. At any time, you can type Help for a list of available commands.
  7. At any time, you can type Help commandname for help on a specific command. For example, you can type help attrib to display the help on the attributes command.
  8. At any time, you can exit Windows Recovery Console by typing Exit at the command line.
After you start the Windows Recovery Console, you receive the following message:

Microsoft Windows(R) Recovery Console

The Recovery Console provides system repair and recovery functionality.

1: C:\WINDOWS

Which Windows Installation would you like to log on to ?

(To cancel, press ENTER)

Enter the number for the appropriate Windows installation. In this example, you would press 1. Then, Windows prompts you to enter the Administrator account password.

Note If you use an incorrect password three times, the Windows Recovery Console closes. Also, if the Security Accounts Manager (SAM) database is missing or damaged, you cannot use the Windows Recovery Console because you cannot be authenticated correctly. After you enter your password and the Windows Recovery Console starts, type Exit to restart the computer.

Use the fixboot command to repair the startup boot of your notebook.

Hi all. Now i'm lose IOS of cisco 2691. help me! and give me how to load IOS to Cisco 2691 by tftp. thanks alot

Recovering Cisco IOS Software imagesIf your Cisco router experiences difficulties and no longer contains avalid Cisco IOS software image in flash memory, you can download a newCisco IOS image using one of the following ROM monitor commands:
blank.gifxmodem—(AllCisco 2600 series routers) Use this command to copy a Cisco IOS imagefrom the console, if the computer attached to your console has aterminal emulator with Xmodem capability. See the "Copying an Image from the Console Using the xmodem Command" procedure.
note.gif Note blank.gifDownloadinga Cisco IOS image from a console is very slow. This procedure should beused only in an emergency and is not recommended for normal Cisco IOSimage upgrades.

For the fastest possible download from a console, set the console speed to 115200 bps by using the confreg ROM monitor command. See the "Configuration Register Commands" procedure.
blank.giftftpdnld—(ExceptCisco 2691) Use this command to copy a Cisco IOS image from a TFTPserver that is accessible through the FastEthernet 0/0, Ethernet 0/0,or Token Ring 0/0 port. See the "Copying an Image from a TFTP Server Using the tftpdnld Command" procedure.
note.gif Note blank.gifThetftpdnld command is not available on the Cisco 2691 router. Therecommended method for installing a Cisco IOS image on a Cisco 2691router is from a CompactFlash memory card loaded in the externalCompactFlash memory card slot. See the "Entering Boot Commands" procedure.

P.S.: If this information was helpful, please rate this solution.

Hard drive failure

Hi, you have nothing to type there. You mean you have chosen the 1st section that opens recovery console, right? not that one. You should see the Terms of Agreement in your WinXP cd first, press F8. A section containing to install a Windows XP appears, Press Enter. Then that's the time it will search for your previous Win xp installation. In will then let you choose whether you will install a fresh copy of WinXP OR to Repair it. Choose the Repair. It will automatically repairs and format your Harddisk without deleting your files in it.  IF there's no Option to repair it, that's the time you will have to go to Recovery Console.
  • To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:
Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
At the command prompt, type the appropriate commands to diagnose and repair your Windows XP installation.

For a list of commands that are available in Recovery Console, type recovery console commands or help at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

For information about a specific command, type help commandname at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
If still you cannot get through to that, drop me a comment again and tell me what you have done. Feel free to ask me.
