the flash has a capacitor inside the filles up with power from the battery then once charged dilvers a sustained voltage to the bulb to create the flash.
Now if this componet has failed or is intermittant then this would happend.
Keep in mind that a battery that is towards the end of its prime will do this to so do not just go for repair all of the sudden try a new battery. If the new battery does not work then you know you got the issue I am talking about thus you going ot need a camera shop to change out that peice.
