I had a similar problem... try holdin the off button long so it turns off..
then switch it on again.. it will stay on the blue screen.. ull hear quiet cliks from inside it and the red light on the left flashing.. that is the device loading the harddrive.. after a minute or so it should load up.. if it doestnt work then u may hav a problem...

but if ud like to try it ursel....i found this on a forum on the net

((((1. I removed all the screws, and removed the battery.
    2. Removed the hard disk from the player by disconnecting the ribbon connector carefully from the mainboard.
    3. Tried to startup the player after putting the battery back in place. This time, instead of turning off, the player showed a "cannot read hard disk" error with the option of formatting it. Made me realise that the hard disk was the culprit. However, I had heard the hard disk noises previously, and they sounded fine, so I realised it was a software issue (file system was corrupted)
    4. Tried to connect it back, same problem as before... Also it is very difficult to first start the player & then connect the hard disk, as the player is designed to shut off in that situation.
    5. The best option after this would be to get a drive enclosure designed specifically for 1.8 hitachi hard disks to connect the disk directly to the computer using USB and format it.
    6. However since I didn't have a specialised enclosure, I did a lot of trail and error with the player itself (running off mains while connecting the hard disk after starting the player without releasing the power button etc etc etc) which Im sure wasnt too kind on the hard disk, but voila, I managed to start it up fine WITH the hard disk in place without the player turning off using some weird combination of holding down the power button and connecting the ribbon on the bootup screen)
    7. After this, I was able to select "format", and the player began working fine I lost all the data on the player itself, but thankfully I had backups of everything! ))))

Archos AV500 30gb not booting up

Try updateing the firmware on the device

If you are unable to perform a firmware update on the player you will most likely have to send it in for service.

Archos 5 frozen screen

I have found a solution for this issue, if you hold down the volume button and the power button for several seconds the Archos goes into a restore type mode. You then plug it into your computer and download the latest firmware update and cut and paste it onto the archos removable hard drive icon that appears in my computer. It will take a few minutes to update but then it will work perfectly.

Hard drive is broken

you need a 1.8" zif format hard drive samsung and toshiba both have models that will work for you, but you need to do a downgrade upgrade trip with the firmware in order to get the archos to use the new hard drive! her is the link to how to do the downgrade upgrade to the firmware

Archos screen only

solution found!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you so much for the support of the Archos team. here is what i did to repair my 504
if your "reset" button doesn't help at all, this is what you'll do.

If you power on the unit by pressing and holding the TV/LCD button and power
button simultaneously the unit will boot into a recovery screen. Once in this
screen choose "Repair Disk" and follow the on screen instructions.

When prompted, please place the following file into the 'root directory' of
the unit:

http://update.archos.com/4/a504/a504_r1.6.53/a504.aos

before i found this solution, i've already given up on my 504, but now it's back!!!! REBIRTH!!!
thanks once again to Tony H from Archos Technical Support

Broken, Don't know what to do.

if it doesnt feel the same as the other buttons, ie you dont get a little click when you press it, then you can try this.
*nb* this involves butchering your device a bit, so if you arent sure you have the probelm i had, try something else.
on my av500, the cancel/off button stopped working, and stopped clicking...
i took the buttons off, the saw that beneath the plastic button is a bevelled springy plate, which had lost its springyness, and was constantly depressed/contacted
my solution was to poke a pin into the plate and pull it out, thus stopping the contact (which was causing weird problems).
i left the plastic buttons off, and now operate the buttons with a fingernail or pen. if the button stops working again, i lift it out again with a pin.
