My phone battery went flat, I recharged it as per usual, and first it came up with "test mode" on the screen, and now it does nothing at all.
The phone is about a month old, and this is making me grumpy!

check the sim card to be inserted well It should never open in this mode if it has the sim card inserted..Also check the screen when you open it ..if it asks to stop this mode..do it ..and start normal ..Another action is to remove the battery and start it again after checking the sim card ..and also pay attention to see the mode it opens ..

As per to your statement, the circuitry of your mobile phone (nokia) is no longer working even if the battery is inserted. Even if its dried already and you did all the necessary action. You have to consider that the circuitry is dead. You may try to bring your mobile unit to a Nokia Care Center near you to assess the matter. You may check if the warraty is covered with your purchase.
If the phone was locked in various networks ,the test mode is an error message witch usually happens when you try home brew devices to unlock it for more than once or this could mean that you used a public phone card to open it,from witch the error results!
