Question about Nikon D40x Digital Camera

1 Answer

D40X Upon switching modes to review photos that have been shot, I can retrieve the images, but after a second or two they each start flashing part of the image (this part appears to be the lighter areas of the picture). How can I turn this off and go back to viewing the image "regularly"?

That is the highlight warning. When viewing the photos, just press the up arrow to cycle to the mode of view you want.

Picture does not appear on the monitor, I must look through the view finder to see what I,m pointing at to photograph

The D40x operates as SLRs have operated for half a century, offering you an optical viewfinder with which to frame and compose your picture. The LCD is for menus, shooting information, and reviewing.

Nikon introduced the live view feature, which allows you to hold your camera so it wobbles at arms' length, with the D3 and D300, released half a year after the D40x.

While almost all current DSLRs have this capability, it was not so common five years ago when the D40x was introduced.

Somehow our pictures got deleted! Is there anyway to retrieve them when it says that the there are no images.

Take no more pics until you've recovered your photos, take the card out of the camera. This is to reduce the chance of you overwriting some of your "lost" photos. There are many good freeware photo recovery software options that may help you recover your photos. This article reviews and outlines several of the better ones:

How to overlay picture in D40x camera

Overlaying pictures, like almost all photo manipulations, is better done on a computer using "real" software rather than on a camera. You get much more control on a computer. However, the D40 does have a wide repertoire of photo manipulation capabilities.

In order to overlay images, you must be shooting in RAW (or RAW+JPEG). Select Image Overlay from the Retouch menu. A preview dialog will be displayed with Image 1 highlighted. Press OK to get a photo selection dialog. Use left/right to highlight the first picture in the overlay. (You can press and hold the Zoom button to see the selected photo fullscreen.) Press OK to select the image. Optimize exposure for the image by pressing up/down. Press left/right to highlight Image 2. Select the second image the same way. Press left/right to highlight the Preview column. Overlay will show you the result, allowing you to go back and change things if you wish. Save will save the overlaid photo.

The shadow in the lower portion of your camera is probably caused by the lens hood. The solution is simple: remove the lens hood whenever you're using the built-in flash.

I cannot review pictures on my Canon PowerShot A400

Yes, the first thing to try is a new memory card. They do go bad. As for the current card, hang onto it. You still may be able to retrieve the photos once you get back to your computer using retrieval software. See this link.

Review isn't working

Hi,
This is not a problem. This is a function that shows you the "burn" area at the photo. If you wishes to drop it just rotate the command dial at rear of the camera. You can change the option by changing the menu as shown at page 75 in the manual.

Blackout on LCD Image Playback

It baffled me too, at first. What has happened is that the navigation dial has been (probably) accidently pressed, thus putting the display in "highlight" mode. When it is doing the blinky thing, press the down arrow to scroll thru the playback modes. A couple of presses and you'll be back to normal. This will show you the super light areas of an image, so it can be useful to avoid loss of detail in highlighted areas, but it sure looks wierd at first.
