Some films were filmed at an aspect ratio greater than that of your TV so you will see black bars on top and bottom of the screen. These are normal. 1.78 is 16:9 so it will fill up the screen but most hollywood blockbusters are filmed at 2.35 so they have scope aspect. TV shows on bluray will for the most part have your 16:9 ratio. Everything's fine so don't worry.

Using standard on tv remote and normal on cable remote both settings crop the edge of the picture

TVs that use cathode ray tube (CRT) cannot display the correct aspect ratio for movies and modern TV broadcasts unless it is in letterbox form. Unfortunately most of the older CRT TVs do not have a letterbox setting.

Movie tip of the day: The Hangover and Veg Pakora
Yesterday I had the house all to my self for the first time in a long while. I decided to spend to spend the time wisely and relax with a quality Hollywood production. I don't know if this is exactly a tip, but it is certainly recommended, haha. So please bear with me if you expected something else!

A good friend of mine had gifted me the Hangover Blueray DVD because he had watched it himself and was very pleased with the movie and its actors. He is my best friend, and we share same taste with many things, movies included, so I felt sure I would also enjoy this movie to watch.

I was very pleased that movie was in Blueray, because I just recently purchased Blueray media player, and I enjoy the high resolution when it comes to movies. Before I sat down to enjoy the movie however, I wanted some snacks to go along, so I went to my kitchen to prepare some veg pakhora.

If you have not tasted Veg pakhora you should really try it. It is a very delicious snack and easy snack to make, just batter fried vegetables (such as cauliflower) enjoyed with mint sauce. It is a classical Indian snack for cold days.

I also made som nice milky chai to go along, as is costumery. Ready for my movie.

Hangover in Las Vegas is about 4 friends (well, three friends and one who the others don't really like) who go to the city of Las Vegas in the USA for participating in a wedding and plays casino. They get really drunk from the alcohol, and get into all kinds of trouble, including fighting with world championship heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson because stealing his tiger.

It is very much of a comedy movie. I really enjoyed it and love the actors, especially Bradley Cooper, who plays central role. Great movie with nice veg pakhora and hot chai tea.

So this is my tip, to relax with great Blueray movie and snacks. The hangover in Las Vegas is really a funny movie.

Have a great day friends,
Best,
Manju Kumar

Why are the movies half screen?

Movies that are created for "Wide Screen" viewing show up in letterbox on your TV. If you go to a theatre you notice it is a big rectangle. To be able to fit all of the widescreen movie on a TV it has to make the height smaller.

Because many people want to see the "complete" Movie, the "Letterbox Format" came about. I do NOT know what the word "Letterbox" actually means, or how that term was chosen. To get the complete Rectangle into that Square, they discovered that they could shrink the entire rectangle to fit that square. Meaning, what used to take 2 inches on your screen, now may only take 1.75 inches. Now a problem arrose. When you shrink the WIDTH to fit your dinky Square of a TV, the HEIGHT also has to be shrunk along with it, or else you're stretching the image as if it was on silly-putty ("Compression"). When the image was shrunk to fit the TV Screen, they were left with a gap at the top and bottom of the screen. So they simply fill it in with "Black". I guess the only alternative was to leave it snowy.

How to change aspect ratio on sharp tv?

You cant change the aspect ratio. You can stretch and zoom programs . Some programs like movies are in letterbox and you can stretch to fill the screen, but the results are not perfect. Circles will be oval and you will cut off some of the viewable picture. This is normal

I purchased a DVD that states: Widescreen Format (Aspect Ratio 1.85.1) I'm unable to get 'widescreen/letterbox'. The movie shows up full screen or a 'stretched' view. All other movies I've...

On the DVD recorder remote: press function menu button: enter setup screen - scroll down to connection - TV aspect - select either 16:9 / 4:3 Letterbox / 4:3 Pan&scan. If you are using an older TV which is not a widescreen, set the aspect to '4:3 Letterbox'.

You should now be able to view your DVD movies from this machine through a 4:3 standard TV in letterbox format. (some DVDs do not allow pan&scan so letterbox or widescreen is recommended). Very rare that a DVD title is not compatible with 4:3 TVs. I assume your deck is set to output 16:9 aspect by default.

I find this is the cheapest and easiest solution and can save lots of dollars in service call-outs. You can always reset the unit back to shipping condition later if you need to, or in the rare case of digital channels disappearing from your tuner memory.

Letter box picture when viewing blue ray discs on Sony BR player

All blu-ray movies are in Widescreen format. So your tv converts the picture to make it look like letterbox. There will be some movies that will have those little black bars at the bottom. There will be some movies that don't. There is nothing to worry about it is normall.

Hope this helps

Wide screen lcd simple question.

Hi pooing stone,

You may sometimes find that even with a television referred to as “widescreen,” widescreen movies still have letterboxing.

This is likely because the movie you are playing is still in the ratio used at a theater. While most televisions are 4:3 for the more square-type or 16:9 for widescreen, a theater screen is much wider still. Unless the movie has been reformatted specifically to 16:9 for your television, you will either see letterboxing or lose portions of the picture by zooming in.

If a movie is available in several ratios, I suggest thinking of all the options before buying. Although purchasing a movie reformatted to 16:9 will prevent the black bars, purchasing it without any reformatting of the size will prevent you losing part of the picture.

FYI: It is very common with Blu-Ray Discs that widescreen means original size, not 16:9.

Thank you,
Jason,
