I use a sony vaio with windows XP. i am confused that you mention a DVD. The USB came with my Garmin GPS and it comes on for a minute when connected to my computer and then goes off. My new GPS works fine in my car, but I need to register it on my computer in order to put the unlock codes in. I can't get it registered. Do you think i should telephone Garmin?

Thank you for helping me. My GPS works great when plugged into the car and only goes off when I use the USB to connect to the computer. Guess the problem is with my computer. I have a second computer today with the same operating system I will try it on that computer. I will let you know if that works. my Garmin just worked great on a 5 day car trip. thanks, and yes I have the yellow slip with the registration number and unlock key.

The garmin Zumo 550 will not connect to the computer even with a full battery charge. I have tried reloading the USB drivers but the computer says that the device is not connected and the device manager says it is an unknown device.

Okay, recap. Your Garmin comes with a mapping software DVD and a yellow slip with the registration number and unlock key. The usb (cable) is used to connect the GPS to the computer to install updates and maps. If the GPS goes on for a minute and the switches off after plugging it in, your battery is probably dead/faulty and the computer can't supply sufficient power through the USB port (power overload pprotection).

Does the GPS work okay when it's not plugged into the car power? Or doesn't it boot up/switch on?

The battery replacement should be done by Garmin or a qulified servicecenter
