If you try to enter in safe mode or at last known config and the laptop reboots or freezes then you need to reinstall the operating system if you want to use that hard drive on hp pavilion a1000n. The laptops have different chipset and XP requires to be the same or similar chipset to boot properly.
on the back of the drive there should be a black, white or yellow jumper. If you look very carfully at the back of the harddrive where the jumper is, it will tell you which position you need to have the jumper in for slave and which position you need to have it in for master. If it is already in the master position, carefully pull it out then push it back into the correct position to act as slave. Some hardrives simpley have a M for master and a S for slave while other harddrive will actually have the words. I hope this helps.
Install first the media center on the primary harddrive with master jumpered.. when everything is working fine... then proceed to the next harddrive. Set its jumper to slave not cable select and install xp pro, it ask you for an option to have dual boot then select the location of windows to be installed...
