You might want to ask Dell that question. They can be more specific about taking care of the performance

If the CPU, GPU, drive, and chipset are faster than the ones in the old computer, the new one should be faster. But a computer is as fast as it is - you can't specify that you want it to run a certain function of a certain program in a certain amount of time. (How much software is installed has nothing to do with the computer's speed - that depends on how much software is actually *running*. Boot time might increase just a bit if you have a lot of software installed, because it will take longer to read the registry files, but once that's done, any program you run will run at the same speed.)

You can also reqauest that they not put on all the trial and garbage software that they usually include with their systems, this alone can slow down a computer by 30%

I have a Dell E6400. I know, ancient! Is it normal that it gets slower when charging? Like when it's using battery power, it's noticeably faster, but when I plug the charger in it just gets slower..

1.Install the system again. If it works, over!
2.remove the battery, and turn on your notebook with charger. If it works, there may be
something wrong with your battery. You can change a new battery.
3.Install the battery, and plug the charger, power your notebook. Open the Power
management, change the Power plan to High performance.

When I plug in my Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop, I get an error message saying it does not recognize my charger, will not charge and will likely slow down my computer's speed/performance. Everything...

Same topic on Dell official community, may it will help.

There is high possibility that your adapter is stuffed. Dell have built in a recognition circuitry into the 65w adapters and when that goes, the system will no longer recognize it as a 65w adapter even though it is still putting out 65w. The system then shuts off the battery recharge circuit and to make matters worse it won't even charge the battery when the computer is off. It also speedsteps the processor down to half its speed so everything runs slower. Only option is to stick with a slow computer that can't be used on batteries or buy another ac adapter.

If you do not want to pay $80 for a original adapter directly from dell, there is an alternative choice to get an 3rd party charger, check this link below:

Slow, stalls, freezes up

If your hard drive is too full, then your computer is going to perform slower. Delete old files which are not required.

Remove programs that you are no longer using. Delete temporary files.

Empty your recycle bin. Right click on Recycle Bin. Click Empty Recycle Bin>Yes.

Run an error check on your computer. The error check can remove errors that slow down your computer. If you are using Windows, you can do this by clicking Start>My Computer. Right click on your hard drive (typically c:) and then select Properties. Click the Tools tab>Check Now and then Start.

Clean up your registry. You can purchase software that will fix any registry errors on your computer.

Perform this computer maintenance on a weekly basis.

Can I upgrade a dell 900mhz p3 processor

Not really [ only possible might be to a faster P3 cpu]. Those motherboards are so old it would be cheaper to just buy a new system as Dell cases & power supplies, etc for that old a computer are all proprietary and would take major modification to upgrade to a new motherboard, ram, cpu and such. Hope this helps.

I would like to know how to transfer data and software from a old computer to a new one I am considering to buy.

There are a couple of simple and fast ways to do this. They both depend on the systems. If you have two systems that both have network interfaces on them, the simplest way to trasnfer the data would be to connect the two computers together using a router (Linksys WRT54G about 60.00 at Staples). You can then share the drive on your old machine, and copy your data to the new machine using your network.

The second, which is slower but cheaper, is to buy a USB flash drive. 4 GB should cost about $25.00. When this device is inserted into a USB slot, it acts as a second hard drive. You can copy data from the old machine, to this and then move it to the new machine.

Good Luck

Software counterfeiting

You have a Microsoft product on your computer that has an improperly activated or blacklisted key. Did you have the machine worked on recently? Did you buy the machine used? Did you buy the Microsoft product new from a store? If you bought a retail copy of a Microsoft product (say Windows or Office) installed it and got this message after activating it, TAKE IT BACK TO THE STORE YOU BOUGHT IT FROM. Reputable stores will exchange it for another (you wont get your money back since you opened it already). If you had work done to your computer before this happened, contact the person who did the work for a solution. If you bought the machine used and the product was already on it, chances are its improperly activated. Do resolve this soon; the machine will get slower and slower, and you can't download and install service packs and updates from Microsoft's website.

Move Itunes from old computer to new one.

The easiest way is to buy the cable & software from Dell. I believe they have it labled PC to PC Direct mover. It will allow you to move anything you want from your old computer to new. Hope this helps.

Motherboard blew up

I would recommend buying a replacement computer, and install the Dell IDE drive in an external 3.5" IDE hard drive enclosure. This way you can pull your information off the the Dell hard drive, and then blow it away.

Keep in mind that new computers use a SATA drive, your old Dell '8200 has an IDE drive. Also keep in mind that your Dimension 8200 drivers won't work on the new computer.

You might be able to install your Dell drive as a slave if you have an open IDE channel available.

Good news is, your old Dell uses RAMBUS memory, which is worth a lot. It's a good parts computer, and most people who look for computer parts know of the bad capacitor issue on Intel made Dell motherboards from that era.
