Http://www.retrevo.com/support/Pioneer-VSX-918V-Receivers-manual/id/16697dj782/t/2/ The power does not turn on. • Disconnect the power plug from the outlet, and insert again. • Make sure there are no loose strands of speaker wire touching the rear panel. This could cause the receiver to shut off automatically. No sound is output when a function is selected. • Make sure the component is connected correctly (refer to Connecting up on page 11). • Press MUTE on the remote control to turn muting off. • Press SPEAKERS to select the proper speaker set (see Switching the speaker system on page 22). • Press SIGNAL SELECT to select the proper input signal (see Choosing the input signal on page 36).

Is it in protection mode or does it power up and appear normal?
Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts and overloads.
Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.
You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.
If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.
If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced hands-on tech.
You haven't answered the questions of Muting or Speaker selection. Also make sure you don't have Tape selected as that would disconnect all audio sources analog and digital.
If you have a recording device or a TV with speakers can you hook one up Tape OUT to the input of the recorder or the TV to see if you have any Line-Level audio routing through the receiver. This will tell us if there is anything to be sent to the speakers.
To recap (and correct me if I'm wrong), the unit will not make produce speaker sound from ANY source, including FM.
It's not clear to me if you have done as requested and used THE TV as a test for the receiver passing Low Level audio from a source such as FM player. That would require the simplest of connections - RCA cable from the receiver Tape Out to the TV audio in and see if the TV gets tthe audio. We need to establish if this is an amp problem or a preamp problem..
Ok, so basically, it's not processing any audio INTERNALLY, so speakers are out of the question at this point. It's a preamp or more basic problem.
Back to the basics: NO Tape selected, NOT Muted, DVD 5.1 (analog inputs) NOT selected. So far we haven't established that anything works. Does FM tune a station (indicated by 'Stereo')?
Sorry, I misread the 'audio to the TV' question.
OK, so Line Level audio is alive, just no 'amplified' audio and the preamp IS functioning to some extent.
When you turn it on does it 'click' after a few seconds (power protect relay coming ON to permit amplfiers to function)?
Verify the Multichannel Analog (labeled "DVD 5.1") and Tape are NOT selected.
And the controls for Tape and Multichannel/DVD5.1 are OFF, right?
I don't know what else to offer. When did this malfunction commence and do you have any knowledge of a correlating event?
(shaking head) Now you''re making it sound like the initial problem was just with the PVR audio to the Pioneer because THAT is what you decided to troubleshoot by connecting the PVR to the TV directly.
Am I to understand you had some unexplained muting while watching the PVR programming and only LATER discovered you have NO AUDIO from anywhere getting out to the speakers?
Well, I can't think of anywhere else to go with this short of a hands-on tech.

Do u have it on mute
the unit is powering up normal but has no sound no matter which mode I use, when setting up in auto mcca doesn't recognize the mic either. There is signal on video but no audio. is there any general protection for audio which can be reset?
there was sound through the HDMI which suddenly stopped while watching TV.
Yesb I have tried the muting and the speaker setting to no avail.
I have hooked up a DVD player which worked with the TV still no sound.
When I used the MCACC there was no sound either and was also giving an error message for the microphone..
hello
I tested and there is audio out to TV from the FM radio, no audio to the speakers from any source.
yes FM works tunes a station indicated by Stereo and there is sound when connected to audio out to the TV
Yes bwhen I turn it on it clicks after a few second and the amplifier starts to warm up
yes the signal input is analog and the mode is FM radio stereo is on the display
It was setup with a motorola PVR through HDMI to the SONY HDTV the audio vent mute several times before which I thought it is coming from the station after switching between stations it always would come back, when a few days ago died. i hoked up the PVR directly to TV and there was audio.
My question is there any key combination which would reset the chip in this receiver. I tried to reset to factory defaults to no avail.
That is correct.HDMI through setting is working both audio(TV)/video. HDMI AMP setting no sound to the speakers video OK.
