Well, you proved that it is a laser pickup problem, and the only way to fix this is change the whole assembly "costly" or replace the unit "best option"

Hello Clean the laser pickup lens by insert a lens cleaning disc into the set, and play it at least three times. If it does not help you. replace the laser pickup unit, with same type and number. OK.
The dust has probably got on the lens, which needs to be cleaned too. You can try a lens cleaning disc. But if that doesn't work I would use some Servisol Video 40 on it.
Probably there is dust on the lens. My CD player (different brand) did the same. I opened the case and cleaned the lens with a photo camera brush (VERY gently). Now it works fine.
If you cannot / do not want to open the device to access the lens, you may want to buy a cleaning CD.
archo69..big chance your laser is on its way out..it also can be the bottom lense is dirty to ,but this requires your stereo to be removed .dismantled and cleaned manually
If your player won't recognize a disc, make sure the CD is properly loaded and not scratched, and that the lens is clean.
Clean the lens. Use only a special CD lens cleaner and follow the instructions carefully.
Check the traverse assembly (the metal rod that the laser travels along and the gear that drives it) if CDs aren't recognized or won't play, frequent skipping occurs at random, CDs randomly get stuck in one spot, the player can't find tracks correctly, or cleaning the lens doesn't work. Dust and lint may be interrupting its function.
