My laptop keeps switching itsself off

OverheatingWhen the CPU overheats then it will shut down (i.e. thermaloverload) and won't boot up again until it has cooled down. If this is theproblem is not fixed then the CPU will eventually fail.
A faulty fan causes the problem or the fan and heat sink assembly are cloggedwith dust.
Check the CPU fan to see if it spins freely, if not replace the fan.
If the fan and heat sink is clogged with dust the remove the dust and make surethe vents are clear and dust free. Use a small brush and can of compressed airto do this.

. Problem with PC Laptops My wife has an

Compressed air is not a good idea for as couple of reasons:

1. Sometimes there is moisture in the can that will be blasted onto the board
2. It can cause dust to get wedged tighter in the fan and sink area

The only real soloution is to strip the laptop and do a manual clean, this is quite simple on the advents, as all you need to do is remove the large cover on the laptop base to access the heatsink and grilles, you can dust out ( hoover) the fan area and the cooling vents, if this proves to be difficult, obtain some thermal paste, remove the screws retaining the heatsink and lift out the fan and sink assy,
Clean and replace after regreasing the cpu top with thermal grease. Make sure fan connector is attached then.
Tighten the screws in sequence, replace plastic cover

HPdv9410us monitor black. External monitor also does not work. LED lights come on then flash off every 30 seconds. This just keeps repeating over and over. Sounds of hard drive and cooling fan powering up...

From your description, you could have a motherboard problem.

Not certain if you have done this: remove the battery again and try to power with just the adapter to see if the battery is faulty.

Remove all dust in any around the fan with compressed air. Hold the notebook so that dust is not blown in the notebook.

Be certain that the CPU has thermal paste on it. Attempt only if you are experienced.

Hope this helps.

Hi, I have an Advent laptop that shutsdown after 10 minutes. Appears to over heat and I can't hear any fans running? Any advise? Regards Steve

Take a can of air and where the air vents are, blow alot of air into them to make sure the vents are free of dust and dirt, that can cause laptops to overheat.

If that doesn't work, you'll need to take apart the laptop and clean out the CPU fan so its clear of dust and dirt.

Heating and performance problems on my Aspire 5520

We had the same problem with the same model. The problem is that the side openings in the fan assembly tend to get plugged with dust. Take the back cover off, and then take the few screws off the covering for the fan assembly. It'll likely be plugged with dust. Get a small brush (like for an electric razor), and just brush the dust off. That will solve the problem. or redo the paste on the cpu with some arctic silver
check the fan and h/sink are clear of dust
see if they have a full manual you can download on the acer site giving an exploded view of the laptop

Computer keeps turning it self off

Hi vflood, This is usually due to a heat issue, possibly from accumulated dust inside the machine. Take the side off and, using canned air available in most electronics departments, blow the dust off of the cpu, heatsink, and fans as well as the ventilation areas. Then blow the rest of the dust out as well.

Also, if you have altered your operating system power settings recently, you may want to revert them to default.

Hope this helps, and please don't forget to rate/vote!

Remove all the cables etc inc the power lead
Remove the battery
Hold the power button down for 20 seconds
Replace battery & Re-start. If you are as lucky as me it will be 'Hey-Presto' and lots of happiness.
