When I scan using the ADF & HP Director I have recently started getting 3-5 magenta, yellow and / or cyan vertical lines about 2 inches in from the left margin. I have cleaned everything, however the colors lead me to believe it is not a cleaning issue. This does not happen when I scan from the glass and also doesn't happen when I copy from the ADF. Does anyone have any ideas for me?

Re: Colored Vertical Lines when ADF Scanning
The scanner system using ADF is not the same as in using from the platen glass, (CIS usually called contact image sensor) reads your document and sends the info to be printed, chances are your CIS assembly could be dirty and have some dirt on its surface, try opening this area on the top of ADF and clean with a moistened cloth, especially the affeced left margin, it should work!

If you lift up the lid on your scanning device you will notice a glass strip about 1 inch thick and then the large area of glass used for flatbed scanning. The 1 inch strip is used for ADF scanning. Because your papper is moving across the glass strip, any dot, smudge or scratch will affect your scanning and cause verticial lines down the page. Sometimes the dot is not visible to the eye. Get some glass cleaner that has alcohol in it and thoroughly clean the glass strip and it should solve your problem. If it turns out to be a scratch on the glass then cleaning won't help.
It is not in the glass. More than likely it is in the rollers of the ADF feeder. If you open the cover of the ADF feeder you can see there are 3 screws (! is found under another small cover furthest to the back of the machine. Once these three screws are removed you can left the entire ADF feeder from the unit. You will then be able to clean all the rollers. Do not use alcohol as this will dry our your rollers and cause them to eventually crack. Just use soap and water to clean the rollers. Then reinstall the ADF feeder assembly back on the machine.
