A microwave can be dead for many reasons.

It may be the fuse, which is usually located on the floor of the oven behind the control panel or between the door switches.

If the fuse is good, it may be an open thermostat or thermal cutout (TCO) / thermal fuse on or near the magnetron or on top of the cavity / body of the oven.

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

When checking thermostats, if it has a hood fan thermostat, that should read open, as opposed to the others, which should read closed.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If it's intermittent or random, it may be a bad connection, usually on the control board or a loose fuse holder, or even an intermittent fuse.

You should do a continuity test on the fuse while it's in the holder (with the microwave unplugged, of course) then turn the fuse by hand or take it out and put it back in, then test it again.

If you remove the fuse, then press the meter leads against the ends, it can allow internal contact to be made and make a bad fuse appear to be good.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

We're happy to help you and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

I just bought the microwave/ convection oven 800 series. Do I have to take the rack out when I use the microwave, and the turntable out when I use the convection oven?

No you do not have to remove anything. The rack is made to be in there. If you still are not sure look in the owners manual or call the place where you bought it. I have a combo oven/ microwave also and can use one or the other or both at the same time

Why does my microwave oven keep cutting out and clock needs resetting before it can be used again

Check the screws in the mains plug and the wall socket. If there is no problem there, check the fuse holder in the microwave itself for bad contacts.
Hope this helps.

Working perfectly until I put the 2nd mince pie into machine. No power so I changed fuse on plug but nothing. Has it just worn out? David

You may have an inline fuse inside microwave. You need to remove the casing of the microwave to see if there is another fuse inside (usually near the magnatron) If there is a fuse there then there's your problem, if not, then there is no use in trying to repair since the magnatron unit has possibly gone bad.
Hope this helped you

Microwave abrupting stopped functioning

It may be overheating due to a failed convection fan, or one of the internal thermostats may be failing.

Convection models can be very involved to disassemble.

Being an LG / Goldstar, I can't point you to any online service data.

My microwave shuts off after a few mins. of use

There seems to be a rash of these units failing in this way due to bad magnetrons. The magnetrons normally have a warranty that runs for a few years. In some models, they have a whole kit they replace, consisting of a new magnetron, stirrer, and high-voltage rectifier diode. I would call GE Customer Relations with your model and serial numbers to see if yours is affected. They're at 1-800-386-1215 (8-6 ET). I would also suggest you ask them for a referral to a GE-authorized servide center in your area. Good luck. I appreciate your thoughtful rating of this answer.

Convection baking only one one side

I'm not familiar with this specific model, but I would assume it has two convection heating elments and one elment is burned out or there is a problem in one side of the wiring that powers the convection elements.
