By the way: As long as you don't write new data to the old drive, you won't corrupt what is there to recover.... good to remember. You can always try another method if that one does not work for you (just be sure to recover data, writing it to the other drive).

You may have to change the settings on the old hard drive. Keep in mind, the old hard drive was a Master. Since there's already a Master in your new machine, you may have a conflict. Look for jumper settings on the old hard drive to set it to Slave. You can also go into your BIOS and assign the older hard drive as a slave.

Best way to recover your stuff is to get the hard drive out of your old laptop. To do this, you will have to unscrew a couple of screws on the bottom of the laptop to get access to the hard drive. After that, you can uninstall the hard drive from the laptop, & take it with you to a computer accessories shop. There they can assist you in purchasing an external box which fits the type of interface of your hard drive (either IDE or SATA). You can then install your hard drive inside this box, & then attach the box to a USB port in your current laptop. This way, the old hard drive will behave like an external storage device (similar to a USB flash stick), & you can then pull out your old data from the hard drive. Moreover, you will have an external portable storage device.

yes it could be, the best way is to get a new hard drive and new installation using your recovery discs. take the old hard drive to a repair shop to recover data or buy a hard drive reader for laptops.

Need to replace hdd but cant copy old one

The Drives Reader arm Is Either Stuck Or Knocked Off Track And Can' Pass Over The Platters... The Hard Drive Will Need To Be Opened Up And Inspected/Repaired Before Data Can Be Retrieved..
You would hear a ticking or knocking sound if the arm is not working right.. If It Sounds Like its Running Properly You Might Have Erased Data by Scratching The Platters, You Can Try Using A Software Named.. Recover My Files..... And Do A Low Level Search, If THere's any life in the drive, This Program will find the data.....
