It would be helpful to know which monitor you have - each one is a little different...
basically, you need to press the "menu" button on your monitor, use the arrow buttons (on monitor, not keyboard) to get to the brightness adjustment screen, hit set, then adjust with arrow buttons, and hit set again, then menu to exit.

I looked this up in my Dell 1908FBPL instructions which should be similar. On the lower right edge, you should have Brightness & Contrast and Auto Adjust controls. These controls interact so you may have to fiddle back and forth to get it right. First, note whether brightness becreases when you press and hold the down (-) button. Check to see whether Auto Adjust changes anything. Also try turning the monitor off then back on.
Please try to turn the monitor off. hold down the Menu button while the monitor is turned off, then press the Power button again to turn the monitor back on. This should unlock your OSD menu. best regards
On the front of the monitor is a menu button. Press it, and using the left and right buttons on the monitor navigate through the menus until you see brightness, contrast, etc. Then adjust them as necessary. Steven
