Issue connecting HD Video Camcorder HV10 to MacBook

To Whom it May Concern,
I have been working all morning to connect the above mentioned HV10 HD camcorder to a MacBook with a USB 2 cable. I have read through several troubleshooting forums as well as trolled around iMovie's help feature but to no avail.
iMovie states that if I connect the camera using a USB cable, the camera will show up as a hard drive on my desktop. This would be perfect, but it doesn't seem to be happening. Worse yet, the camera itself does not have an outlet for a firewire cable. I have restarted the computer twice (once with the camera plugged in, once with it detached), but even this old trick isn't working.
What else can I do? Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to buy a firewire adapter for the USB cord (if such a thing even exists)?
Thank you for your time!

I also am having the same problem but have been able to try to use a commercially purchased firewire from the Apple Store and it still won't work.  I have the latest version of iMovie as well from iLife '09.

The USB cable is only for downloading still pictures from the camcorder. I don't know of any way to download movie unless you have a computer with the necessary IEE1394 (DV) terminal. Sucks as I have a Macbook Pro and can't download the video!

Actually, sorry I messed up on that solution. Macbook Pro has a firewire 800 port - you need to buy a 4pin to 9pin firewire cable should be available in most electronics stores. If you have an older one with firewire 400 then you need the 4pin to 6pin cable.

Macbook pro doesnt recognize the panosonic pv-gs9 when connected with firewire

I take it that your macbook pro has imovie on it. If you open up imovie and plug in your camcorder it should recognise the camcorder and give you access to putting the movie onto your mac. Have a look at http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/ it should help.

If the touch screen of the Camcorder is not working, please follow the troubleshooting steps.

Please make sure that you're using fully charged batteries.

Turn off the Camcorder and turn ON again and check the operation.

Try resetting the Camcorder by pressing the reset button behind the LCD panel.

Perform a power resetting of the Camcorder. To perform power resetting, please remove the battery pack, turn the Power switch to Play/EDIT/ON for more than 15 seconds, turn the Power switch to OFF position and then reinsert the battery pack.

If the issue persists even after performing all the above-mentioned steps, service is required.

I hope this information will help you to resolve the touch screen issue of the Camcorder.

The camcorder records fine, but when I play back, the counter number does not increase, and the screen is blue color (no video picture). Please advise me what to do. Thanks.

This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

I want to download video from Canon HV10 to computer, the Zoombrowser only has stills, can you help

How are you connecting the camera - often this is the case if you use USB - to download the video you need to use the firewire connection - sometimes known as IEEE1394
All the manuals and info is here http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=369&modelid=14059
Page 64 of the manual shows the connection and refers to DV cable, and talks about using the DV for video IEEE1394 If you are unsure if your PC has a firewire connection look for this type of connector http://img.tomshardware.com/us/2004/04/02/go_external/i.link.jpg OR Have a look at device manager Press the Windows key (bottom left of the keyboard} and at the same time press the R key, now in the search box that appears - type devmgmt.msc - on the screen that appears look for network adapters, use the + sign to open the network adapters - and you should see an item with 1394 listed if you have a firewire connection
If this solutions solves you problem, please do not forget to rate my solution. If not, then please comment back so I can help some more

MacBook Pro/FCE does not capture video from XH A1 any more. Message: Cannot initialize HDV deck-please connect camera.

Play the tape on the camera before connecting it to the mac and loading up the software. You could always see if iMovie is giving the same error message too... This usually fixes the problem for me and usually arises when switching between SD and HD on the camera.

My Mac does not recognize my Canon HV 30 DV when i connect the FireWire.

I've been around the block with this for days, including a fresh installation of the software on my MacBook Pro. Sigh.

Here's what seemed to work:

1) Reset Vixia HV30 (tiny reset button behind the battery). Did not change any settings on the camera after that.

2) Installed Canon's software that dropped some canon-related files in Library/Quicktime folder.

3) Opened new iMovie 6.0.3 and Final Cut Express HD 3.5.1 projects (a) FCE (using Easy Setup in FCE) to Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60 (b) iMovie 'HDV 1080i'.

4) Connected 4-pin --> 6-pin firewire cable out of the camera to a bus-powered external drive and from the drive, firewire 800 --> firewire 800 --> MacBook Pro 10.5.8.

This was a last-ditch, Hail Mary effort. It worked, and the camera showed up in the System Profiler firewire window, too, whereas it had not before all of the above. Still does not show up when hooked directly from the camera to the FW 800 input, but at least I can capture now.
