Wireless Connection

You might have an anti-virus or firewall program installed on this laptop that is blocking your access. Norton Internet Security and TrendMicro PC-cillin are notorious for creating connectivity problems if they are not properly configured.

When I try to install my wireless router, my desktop does not recognize it.

you need:

1. a wireless adapter (working).. you adapter needs to have drivers that go with your operating system.. if you have problems on this area you need to go to the adapter manufacturer website and dowload drivers for your device according to your operating system (ex. if you have a xyz model made by company z and you are using windows vista... you need to go to company z, look in support for you to download driver and look for your device model xyz and look for a vista driver... you may need to install the driver first before plugging your device in (if your wireless adapter device uses a usb)
2. a wireless access point (a router)
3. if your router is configured with defaults (not recommended for security reasons) you're pretty much set, but if your router is configured (recommended) you need to know:
a. the SSID (name of your router/network),
b. wireless key or passphrase and
c. method of authentication set on your access point (wep, wpa, wpa2)

for a general reference of what you need and how it's suppose to work read the following article

to set up your computer to access a wireless router follow this steps

Limited or no connectivity to the internet. my setup: the telephone port is approx 30m from where i need internet access. Originally I had a dlink wireless router set up but was connected via cable, now...

On which port of the D-link router did you plug the WRT160N router?

Do this setup.

Disconnect the WRT160N from D-link.

Connect a computer to port 1 of the WRT160N. Access the setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 on the address bar. you may need to type in the username and password for WRT160N. on the setup page Change the LAN IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1. save the settings.

Connect a cable from port 1,2,3 or 4 of the D-link router to the Internet port of the WRT160N. turn off everything then turn them on starting from cable modem>D-link >WRT160N then computer.

You should be able to access the internet.

We just got wireless internet this past year at our house and when my dad set it up he forgot to write down the password which lets you onto the internet. So now we are able to log on through the computer...

to set the wireless settings you need to use a computer that is connected to your router or the computer that is working on your router wirelessly.

access the setup page of your router using IE on the address bar type the ip of your router, by default it is 192.168.1.1, username=admin and password=password, once your on the setuppage go to wireless settings option on the left pane. you will be able to see the wireless security there.

the reason why you dont know the wireless security for the old computers its because once you typed the security key in the computer will remembers it and save it on the system.

I just bought a 4720. Iy has windows vista. I also have an old Toshiba sattelite with windows xp. To connect to the internet the toshiba works every time. The new acer sometimes does but mostly does not....

You will have several problems to install Windows XP in a computer designed to use Vista. I personally don´t think it´s fair.
But your problem possibly is not related with the OS. Are you using a wireless router? If yes, the problem may be your 4720´s wireless adapter (probably internal). You can test it by using another wireless network (most malls, shopping centers, airport or hotels have avaiable public wireless internet access).

You have done big mistake that's why you are getting problem.

1)Regarding installation of win XP over windows vista.
You have to install first lower version and then higher version i.e. you should install first win xp and then windows vista. But vice-versa you can't do it.
So my suggestion is that format your c drive then install win XP
after installation win XP install win vista.

2) which operation system do you want to open .
You can remove it using windows tweak utility software wich is freely available on most of the website. Also you can manually edit it.
For manually do this.( i m not sure about windows vista it is available or not)
right click on my computer->click on Advanced Tab->setup and recovery framework click on settings->click on Edit button
You will see the boot.ini file. You can remove the windows XP line from that file.
