Question about Zenith R56W36 56" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Follow up to JUL 9th distorted picture question

On July 9th you replied to someone who seems to have the same problem I am having. I did not see any advise on repair so I will give my issue with the hopes of possibly getting some assistance.
I have a Zenith that the picture distorted. My stepdaughter said she smelt a slight burning smell and the picture distorted (kind of curved) and the colors look like watching a 3D movie without glasses.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

    Slinteriors,

Thanks for helping. The model number is actually R49W36.

The picture is curving down from the top and up from the bottom with the 3D effect.

    SLinteriors,

I'll check on the parts right away. One last question (I hope) though. How will I know if and which feed resistors need replaced. This will be my first venture into the back of a TV.

  • dr ogers Jul 15, 2008

Ok... You have been a GREAT help so I feel like a friggin idiot even mentioning this but... I do not see any feed resistors or any 3.9 ohm, 2 watt resistors period on the site you linked. I guess I will have to look elsewhere unless I just dont know what I'm looking for (very possible but seems simple enough)

  • dr ogers Jul 15, 2008

Hmm... Ok, Ive opened the back. What I found was that I have 2 each STK392-570 with about 24 resistors. Does this sound right to you?

That would be the convcergence ICs and feed resistors that need replacement. Can you reply to this same post and verify that your model is the R56W36? I will then post the correct ICs and feed resistors for your model as well as a link where you can get replacement ICs and resistors with free instalation instructions with pictures.

You will need to replace both convergence ICs they are STK392-120 also you may need a few of the 3.9 ohm 2watt resistors as well as its likely a few of them will need to be replaced, there are 12 of the 3.9 ohm 2watt feed resistors . You can get replacement parts at the following link with free instalation instructions with pictures.

You should see a little discoloration in the center of the resistor and they will all be located near the ICs there will be twelve of them all the same and they will be fairly large in size compared to normal resistors.

The Resistors are listed under the catagory called convergence resistors, and you will see the item called 1-4 watt convergence resistors just add as many of those as you need and they send a email within minutes confirming your order and verifying which resistor ratings you need as they dont list them all as there are thousands of resistor ratings, but when you reply to the order confirmation just let them know they are 3.9 ohm 2watt resistors that you orderd and thats what they will send. The ICs are under the Convergence IC catagory.

Replace or resolder your convergance IC's. What is a common problem is over time the heat emitted by the chips weakens the solder joints on the circuit board. If your lucky just a resolder job is all it needs.

Same sort of problem here. My red looks like it's pinched in the middle and is curving inward. The whole picture looks like you should have 3-D glasses. I've heard it's a problem with a convergence chip, but I have no clue how much that will cost to have someone come fix and we live in a rural area in MO. I'm sure that will jack up the price. Mine is only about 4 years old, I wonder how much I could sell it for (as is) and buy a new TV.

What's the model number? Describe the distortion in some detail. Is it intermittent? Does it seem to affect anything else, like audio, when it's present?

Distorted picture on RCA LCD TV

I have the same tv. Had repair man come to my home in late april. Said it is the power convergence board. $225 for parts and labor I was told. Bad thing is part was supposed to arrive mid-may,then mid-june and now mid-july. He say's part is on back order. I'm actually going to contact RCA soon to find out if this is true. This seems to be a common problem with this particular T.V
