Simply turning it on or off will not result in a loss of any data if you already have data stored on it.

I assume that you have the device connected to your computer via a USB cable. If it has an on/off switch either in the front of back go ahead and press it. It should take a few seconds for the computer to recognize the device, but it should work just fine.

Hope this helps.

Can't open Maxtor one touch 4 mini

If the external hard disks is plugged to a USB port and is not detected anymore, try uninstalling the USB Root Hub devices in the device manager. They will automatically be reinstalled on reboot and that can help fix detection issues.

But did you look in the Disk Management module of Windows to see if the disk is there? Right-click My Computer and select Manage.

2 usb plugs which goes where??? maxtor 120gb external hardrive pn9nx2dc-500

You have what is call a USB POWER Y ADAPTER: this is designed to provide extra current to your USB HDD drive from a second PC USB port. Plug the end with two USB connectors to your PC/LAPTOP and the single-ended plug to your drive.
Hope it helps! Let me know how you go.

Transfering data from Maxtor to a new computer

It's a USB Hard drive, so you should plug the USB port into one computer, put your information on it, then plug the USB port into the other computer. Browse the Hard Drive for your data. It's like a larger flash drive.

Maxtor one touch

Hi, You can try and use PowerQuest PartitionMagic. It will allow you to partition/format/check most HDs including USB connected. Choices/options are from FAT16 to NTFS and Linux. Another handy disk utility that is a freeware is HP's bootable flash utility at http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/serveroptions/us/download/23839.html Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things are or should you need further information. Good luck and kind regards.
