Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

Won't Boot Up

USB ports had stopped working and I was told to reboot holding ALT and F10 to get to the usb port settings.

When I tried this it gets to the Windows screen and then freezes. I can reboot holding F2 for setp no problem although can't see anything in there that would help.

F12 works for boot menu but F8 doesn't work for safe mode so I can't get in.

One other thing I have just noticed is that the screen it gets stuck on says windows XP but I have vista installed. Not sure if it always said that or not although I assume it did.

Any help gratefully received,

I fixed this same problem using a registry scanner. Here's a link to a good free one:

I've used this one and it sped up my computer by quite a bit. Hope this helps.

Ok, so you're only getting to the Windows Vista or Windows XP splash screen? Please clarify which one. I know you mentioned Windows XP before, but I thought that might have been induced through some keyboard key combinations.

If you boot up without hitting any keys you get as far as the Windows splash screen.

The progress meter on the bottom half of the screen makes a couple rounds and then the machine reboots? So you're stuck in a rebooting loop?

Not sure what the boot up issue is, but let's backup to the original USB problem.

Can you go into device manager and uninstall your USB Root Hub drivers? This will more than likely disable your keyboard and mouse as you remove the Root Hubs if the keyboard/mouse are connected using USB. Just reboot your computer after and the drivers should reinstall automatically.

The windows XP boot thing could be somekind of bootable xp diagnostic partition provided by ACER although I've never seen this.

Let see what the USB removal and reboot does first.

Can you boot up into the normal operating system?

Is the machine setup to dual boot with XP or Vista?

How long do you wait when the machine freezes before turning it off or restarting?

What model of laptop is this? and how old is it?

When you restart your Computer, hit F11 alot until you get into the Startup Settings.

Choose Format Drive
Let it format

When you start your computer again, you will be all set. But you will lose all of your files, so be careful.

If this helps at all, please give me a FixYa. - Evolution

Why is the usb ports of my HP laptop not working?

You can try doing two things. First you can go into the BIOS (F10) and restore to default settings. Reboot. Assuming you have windows vista or windows 7, from within Windows go into device manager and find the usb hub(s) right click and go into properties/advanced. You will have the option to reset the hub. Do it for all hubs. Reboot. If this still does not work, then your option is to have the motherboard repaired or replaced or just get a usb external hub so you can have more ports.

Turn the computer off in the normal way.

Turn the computer on, tapping the F2 key [it might not be F2, could be esc, F1 F8 or F10, depends on the make and specific model of your PC, for my HP desktops it's F2] a few times each second. This should enable you to enter the BIOS set-up (which key to press) (see;_ylt=A0LEV2bavtZTVmcAjVFLBQx.;_ylu=X3oDMTE0bTVyc3Q3BHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMQRjb2xvA2JmMQR2dGlkA1ZJUFVLMDdfMQ--?qid=20071012195523AAXHNK3)
Look at he screen carefully while you do this, because the computer often tells you how to enter the BIOS setup during the start-up process, but the information isn't the for very long: you may have noticed this while you starting the computer all those times in the past.

Once in the BIOS set-up navigate to BOOT options or something like that. You may have to work your way every option (there aren't that many) to find it. Once there it will show a list of places to boot from - these are typically the hard drive, the optical disk drive, and the USB port, you may even have eSATA option. These will be in order. Change the order to make the laptop try to boot from a USB device first. Now exit the BIOS set-up saving the change to the boot device order. If there isn't a USB device when you next boot the laptop will just try the second device on the list. If you start up the computer with a bootable USB device in a USB port, it will boot from that device. (eg a flash memory drive)

There are other ways, but this is fundamental way if your BIOS supports boot from USB (my desk tops do not so I had to find another way)

Asus eee pc 900 netbook will not boot. Error message says remove disks or other media press any key to restart

Hi guys, i hope this could bring little light to this boot-stop error. First of all sorry for my english /slovakia/. So thi applies for asus eeepc 1005HA /maybe some other models too - depending on motherboard construction. In my case it was 2 parts motherboard which were conected via flex cable. Both parts contrains USB ports which is the think what stops you access to BIOS and all functions. If you hit TAB button during start up /best way to do so before pressing powerbutton/ you will see post messages, which stops on inicializing USB controlers. So what you need to do is
1. turn on computer
2.unplug flex cable which leds to usb ports
3. now you should see progress on your screen, so go to BIOS /F2/
4. visit ADVANCE tab
5. visit ide onboard configuration
6. check for usb controler configuration
7. mark it as DISABLED
8. hit F10 to save your settings

after this hint you will have full access to all functions like before, USB ports included.

hope this little research hlep u too, my eee1005HA is now glowing

My Acer Aspire 1 will not boot properly. There ia a small white cursur blinking in the upper left corner. I tried Alt f10 but that did not work:-( Do you have any suggestions?

Reboot (by pressing Alt Ctrl Del) press F2 frequently after reboot to go to bios setting. Make sure NO flashdisk/ thumbdrive plugged in to usb port. Choose hardrive as firstboot (in the bios setting under the boot tab) save the changes and exit

good luck

How do i restore my acer laptop to factory

Select models have the ability to have the operating system reinstalled from a hidden drive built into the netbook. To start the Acer eRecovery:
  1. Tap the Alt and F10 keys togther during Power-On Self-Test (POST while the Acer logo is being displayed).
  2. When prompted with a boot screen, hit the Enter key.
  3. After the Acer eRecovery program has loaded follow the prompts to reinstall the operating system.
If the ability to reinstall from the previous method is not available or fails during the recovery, recovery of the operating system will need to be from Acer Recovery Media. In order to recover the system using Acer Recovery Media an external optical disc drive is required.
  1. Press F2 to enter BIOS Setup during Power-On Self-Test (POST while the Acer logo is being displayed).
  2. Arrow over to "Boot".
  3. Ensure that the external optical drive is plugged into a USB port.
  4. Refer to on screen instructions to set the first device to "USB CDROM".
  5. Press the CD-ROM drive eject button and insert the System CD.
  6. Close the CD-ROM tray.
  7. Press "F10", then press "Enter" to save the changes and reboot the system.
  8. The netbook will boot from the Acer Recovery Media, follow the prompts to reinstall the operating system.

USB ports quit working

I had this happened to me also. you need to check the system bios to see if something shut the USB ports off. normally hitting DEL or f10 prior to bootup will put you in the system BIOS. Normally all usb ports disable because a device was unplugged without properly shuting the device off.

0701 usb over current on hc/port error

I had the same problem on a toshiba satellite u400.
Usb over current on port ... blabla..
Please press F1 to resume or F12 to install.
F1 just ended up in a screen asking to press F2 or F12 which did nothing.
F12 did nothing.

Rebooting the pc ended in a black screen with a flickering HD symbol.

To be able to boot again on the BIOS I had to remove the battery and disconnect the plug.
Once It restarted booting on the error USB over current.

Si I took a USB mouse and tried to boot with the mouse plugged in on port , then another ... at the third port the PC booted normally with no error :)

Don't have any idea why it became faulty but it's now solved for me.

Sounds like a driver went astray.
Normal 0 Try disconnecting the Camera from the USB port and reinstall the CD software program. When the program asks you to connect the camera to the USB port, do so and it should work.
Hope this helps. Bud

Usb ports do not work

Try going into device manager and deleting the USB devices, Reboot and let Windows try and reinstall the drivers. If that doesn't fix your problem post that it didn't work and I'll get another message.
