Posted this question re replacing the felt on the dryer (causing stains)

I'm not very adept with hardware repair. I can probably get the felt (parts center?), but how do you get it out and put the new strip in?

thanks much,
Darlene

You pretty much need to take the dryer all the way apart in order to get to replace the felt.  I pulled the drum out and took my time cleaning off all the old felt and glue residue before gluing the new felt guides on and putting the dryer back together.  I found details and parts to order at repairclinic.com

Go to repairclinic.com and type in the model number and it will give you step by step instructions.  it involves taking the top off in order to take the front off.  That website is what I used and i had no problems what so ever.

We have a General Electric Dryer, Model # DDE 5300 GBLWH.WE KEEP GETTING WHAT LOOKS LIKE OIL STAINS IN THE CLOTHS .IT NOT THE WASHER THATS A GE TOO .

There could be some rubber/plastic or other contaminants in the drum, that leach on to your clothes when the dryer heats up. It's possible that some oil got on the felt seal that goes around your drum.

I have a frigidare fse44ghso clothes keep getting caught and stained up into the edge of the drum. Can i fix this?

You will need to replace the "glides" and the "felt" on your dryer. Here are the glides to order. Here is the lower felt to order. Here is the upper felt to order.
You have to remove the top panel first and then the front panel. Remove the old felts and clean the metal surfaces from the old particles. Install both new felts using the glue included in the felt/glide assembly. Let it dry before reassembly.

Here is a video to show you how to do the upper felt.

Here is a video to show you how to do the lower felt.

Here is a video for the glide replacement.

The videos may be a little different in the model they show but the process is the same. Your dryer will be as good as new after this repair.
The parts comes with a 365 day, any part, any reason return.

How to repair stainless steel on a dryer drum

For my Frigidaire manufactured Kenmore dryer, the stainless steel drum is part ordinary painted steel (front flange). That flange is part of the suspension for the drum. The flange rides on a nylon wear pad above the door. On both sides of the pad, there is a felt that is glued to the dryer front panel to act as a seal. What happens is that the paint on the ordinary steel flange rubs through and rusts, staining clothes during the drying cycle. I have to replace the nylon pad and felts every few years to combat the rusting issue. The felt and nylong pad assembly is glued to the cabinet flange using heat resistant adhesive.

Im gettin 1/2 inch to 2 inch rust like streaks on my light clothing after drying. I took a wet white cloth and wiped them along the felt seals at the front and back of the dryer and got the same staining....

You are absolutely correct. Replacing the felt seals will definitely solve the problem and you have to look forward to replacing the same in another 4 years. The seals are sold as pair as you need to replace both but they are cheap and easy to replace. The only hard part is getting to the seals as you need to get the top and the front panels then the drum itself to get to the rear seal.

The dryer drum seems to be out of alignment causing a gap between the front of the dryer and the drum. Cloths get caught in this gap causing stains. I had the felt-like material replaced and that corrected...

Hi,
I think that the real problem you are having is because of wear in the guide wheels that hold the drum. The easiest way to see where the guide wheels are and to get replacements is to do a search for "appliance parts" you will get a number of different parts sites come up.
Enter your model number and the sites will have exploded views of your dryer. You can see from these where the guides are and also get replacements.
Check a number of sites as the prices can vary greatly from site to site and there is no one site that seems to be always the best price.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

Brown stains in the drum of my whirlpool dryer

Apparently a common problem with 4-5 year old Kenmore and Whirlpool dryers. The paint is rubbed off the back panel by the felt seal attached to the rotating drum. The bare metal gets rusty from the damp clothes. The rust is rubbed off by the felt seal. The entire felt seal will turn brown. The stains are transfered to the clothes. The rust stains can generally be removed by additional cleaning.
I'm going to replace the felt seal on the drum, clean the rust off the back panel and see how long it lasts. Seal w/ adhesive is $30-40.
Some have suggested painting the back panel, but i don't think fresh paint is going to last long. The original paint was probably electrostatically applied and maybe baked on.

Clothing coming out stained with rust colored marks-purchased dryer in 2001

The felt needs to be replaced around the drum. When it wears out, this will cause these marks. The felt is the seal that allows the drum to rotate around the door.

Rust marks from a stainless steel drum?

If you are talking about brownish colored stains on your clothes, this is actually caused by the drum seal going bad. The drum seal fits around the perimeter of the drum where it meets the rear bulkhead (wall) of the dryer and is a felt type material. One some dryers the drum is reversible and there is a seal on both ends of the drum. When the seal gets old, it becomes brittle and starts to crack and come apart. There's usually a brownish colored pigment that comes off the seal and can get on your clothes. If the seal is worn too much, your clothes could actually be getting caught in the drum between the seal and being dragged. This will also caused brown streaks on your clothes. Now...what causes the seal the wear prematurely are high temperatures. If you do not routinely clean your dryer ducting, your dryer could actually be overheating. This can cause the seal to become too hot and make it brittle over a period of time. Any appliance repair dealer will carry the drum seals for the dryer as it is a common part that requires replacement. If you could post back with your EXACT model number (located around the door opening) I could find a part number and price for you. In addition, I could give you step-by-step instructions on how to replace the seal if you wish to tackle this on your own. It's not a difficult repair and the average consumer should be able to accomplish this task. It will also save you $$ on the long run if you don't want to pay high labor charges of the appliance repair guy. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Brown streaks on clothes

mich, The brown streaks are probably caused by worn drum guides and lower basket seal. I've seen this quite often on Frigidaire dryers. Part numbers 5303937139 upper felt guide and 5303283286 lower basket seal. This can be a task for an inexperienced person but can be done. It requires removing the top panel and front panel/door assy. The old guides have to be scraped off. The upper felt guides and lower seal glue on. Catriver...post back.
