The power supply is a 5 VDC, 500 mA (outer negative, inner positive) commonly used for mp3 players, but probably you must cut the mini usb plug and adapt a compatible jack with the hub.

I've found I have more things with this power supply mini plug: I have an old chinese mp3 with a little hole in the side to plug a power supply, and I have a FM Signal Transmitter (with a plug for audio it is for sending the audio of any source that can take headsets, up to the air as FM radio to hear "wirelessly" in my car radio), and I have some pair of mini PC/netbook/cell baffles with USB powering and a deck for my smartphone. In this mini baffles, the usb powering cable is on one side an usb plug, but at the end of the wire is a little plug made of the same size and +/- as for the Encore! I think you can either connect the usb to a "USB port power supply" that are cheap and has a usb power out, if you get this USB power cord, it would be solved with an power supply of the kind that has USB female plug in.

Western Digital external USB 2.0 Problem

Buy an External USB 2.0 Hub with the 5.0V power supply. I have a TARGUS 4 Port Hub. MY WD2500XMSB works fine thru the HUB, but will not work using any cable (even the one that came with it) when directly connected to the USB port on my computer. The power consumption of passports sometimes exceeds the .5 milliwat rating for the ports and ccause the port power to interrupt (see USB 2.0 specifications). The external hubs with external power have a higher power output usually an can power the passport drives. CW Rumsey

Targus Travel USB 2.0 4-port Hub

sometimes usb hard drives will not work through a usb hub.
if the drive works connected to the laptop but not the hub then that's how you'll have to use it.
it's also possible the laptop cannot power both the hub AND the drive, in whaich case you'll need a powered hub (one you plug in to the mains).

4 port HUB is connected. My computer doesn't show it. Help! It is all plugged in with USB cable and when I go to MY COMPUTER it doesn't show.

The hubs usually show up in the hardware list and not as a seperate device. Only way to know it is there is to plug a usb device into it.

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especialy true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

My hard drive and midi controller wont work with usb

When you connect a hard drive and any other USB device to a 4 port hub you have to use the external power supply all the time. You may have fried the power pins on the USB port you used to connect the 4 port hub. If you can get the hard drive to work separately on the USB port, the 4 port hub may no longer be passing power from the laptop.

Power supply for Targus 4 hub usb 2

Most USB hubs do not need an external power supply, except when a connected USB device draws more power than the computer/laptop USB port can supply. In this case an external power supply will need to be connected to the USB hub.
Normally this would be a 5 volt power supply, but make sure the polarity on the connector matches the power connector on the hub, check the label on the hub, sometimes it states to power requirements of the hub as well as the polarity on the connector. Normally the pin on the hub's power connector is positive (ie. +5V)
