My dishwasher emits a dead animal smell immediately after filling. I have a 20-year-old KitchenAid KUDS220T3 dishwasher. The racks are a little corroded, but it still cleans dishes just fine. About two months ago, it started smelling like a dead animal immediately after the dishwasher fills with hot water, during the time the water is being heated, but before agitation begins. The smell appears to be coming from around the door. If I open the door, everything inside the dishwasher smells fine. Since we have occasional rats and mice around the house, I pulled the dishwasher completely out of the opening, and inspected the insulation, the mechanisms under the tub, and also inspected the opening. There are no dead animals, nor is there even a hint of a bad odor anywhere. After I re-installed the dishwasher, I carefully cleaned all crud around the door and gaskets, and thought perhaps that would help. I have also inspected the (and smelled) the air trap and the garbage disposal, but they both smell just fine. I tried pouring bleach down the air trap tube and then ran the dishwasher, but that didn't make any difference. I have removed the round screen trap in the bottom of the tub, but there was absolutely no residue or dirt anywhere down there. I have come to the conclusion that the smell must be coming from sort of vent mechanism in the door, and in looking at the exploded diagram, I see a "lower baffle" that perhaps might be the problem, but I can't see an obvious way to remove this. So, are there any vents or other things in the door that might, after many years of service, have accumulated enough gunk to create a carrion (dead animal) stench? Thanks!

OK, you said: "This vent that you are describing is to allow air to flow in for the
    heat/dry cycle ... Is there a
pice of screen that blocks it?"

I actually didn't describe a vent, only that the diagram shows a "lower baffle." However, I cannot actually see or remove that baffle, nor can I see any vent. I agree that it must exist in order for the air from the "hair dryer" built into the bottom of the dishwasher to exit during the drying cycle. The question is: where is this vent, and how do I get at it? I am an engineer and handyman, so I can disassemble anything, but I didn't want to repeat what I did a few days ago, namely taking the whole darn thing out only to find that there was no problem in the insulation or enclosure under the sink.

Thanks for taking the time to help!

    John

This vent that you are describing is to allow air to flow in for the heat/dry cycle. Some times little creatures want to "mark" their territory by "spraying". Spray some type of cleaner like ammonia into it and **** it out with vacuum a few times. Most likely will have to flush it out quite a bit if I am right about the air flow which that is all it can be. There could be a creature that got in that vent. Is there a pice of screen that blocks it? Can you adhere one to it. I hope this is what you are describing to me. Let me know if it is not and I will research it more and thanks for using FixYa.

On most models the vent is in the door by the latch or at the bottom of the door which I think is your location. I respect engineers by the way. I am an inspector. By previous experience with this appliance this is all it can be and I'm sure it is from a furry creature. You should not have to take off the entire drain assembly unless you may think it has residue from draining which can cause this foul odor also. Best of luck John.

Help! The dishes on the top rack of my kitchenaid dishwasher (KUDS01FKPA0) don't get clean. this problem started last year, and two different things may be happening. A guy replaced a part (a screen with a...

The part he replaced (chopper) is a common problem with this particular machine. If he has removed all residual food particles from the machine, and you have done your part to rinse them thoroughly before loading, I doubt you have the same issue. There could be other possibilities. One: The water inlet valve could be restricting, thereby not allowing the the proper amount of water into the machine. Two: The internal pump impellers may be worn, and not propelling the water upward enough to reach the top rack. Hope this lends a little insight.

Your best option is to contact a used appliance dealer and hope for the best on locating racks.
I priced some similar model racks for a customer 2 months ago. They were over $400 each.

Kitchen Aid SS Dishwasher KUD102CRBS1 - Top Rack has 3 rusty spot

Looks like you can get the upper rack for about half that, direct from Sears-
Dishwasher Dishrack Upper Part Number 8539234 Sears PartsDirect
Still kinda pricey if you only have a few bad spots.

There is special touchup coating (never tried it myself, but looks like it gets good reviews, and the price is right)

Or prong covers if you just have rust or damage on the tips (I've used ones like these, the long ones stay on good)

Dc 14 animal emits a terrible smell after about ten minutes of us

You can take a Febreze sheet and put it into the canister/dirt bin where the dirt spins around. It'll spin around whilst you vacuum your house and it'll spread the fragrance through the vacuum and hopefully get rid of the smell for you.

You can also blow out the cyclone with an air compressor or a leaf blower by opening the bin door on the bottom of the dirt bin and blowing up the cyclone in the middle - perhaps there is something lodged up there that is causing the foul odor.

KitchenAid KUDR01TJ Dishwasher Cleaning Problem

Sinder...this sounds more like a water temperature issue than anything else. First, turn on your hot tap. If you can't hold your hand under it after it fully heats (over 125)...you should be okay. If not, raise your water temp or use the sani cycle to raise the temp. Change brands of detergent. Salt...I don't think so. You're using detergent...not soap...which would have been affected. Pressure should not be an issue...once the unit is filled, it makes its own pressure recirculating with the wash pump.
