This vent that you are describing is to allow air to flow in for the heat/dry cycle. Some times little creatures want to "mark" their territory by "spraying". Spray some type of cleaner like ammonia into it and **** it out with vacuum a few times. Most likely will have to flush it out quite a bit if I am right about the air flow which that is all it can be. There could be a creature that got in that vent. Is there a pice of screen that blocks it? Can you adhere one to it. I hope this is what you are describing to me. Let me know if it is not and I will research it more and thanks for using FixYa.
On most models the vent is in the door by the latch or at the bottom of the door which I think is your location. I respect engineers by the way. I am an inspector. By previous experience with this appliance this is all it can be and I'm sure it is from a furry creature. You should not have to take off the entire drain assembly unless you may think it has residue from draining which can cause this foul odor also. Best of luck John.

OK, you said: "This vent that you are describing is to allow air to flow in for the
heat/dry cycle ... Is there a
pice of screen that blocks it?"
I actually didn't describe a vent, only that the diagram shows a "lower baffle." However, I cannot actually see or remove that baffle, nor can I see any vent. I agree that it must exist in order for the air from the "hair dryer" built into the bottom of the dishwasher to exit during the drying cycle. The question is: where is this vent, and how do I get at it? I am an engineer and handyman, so I can disassemble anything, but I didn't want to repeat what I did a few days ago, namely taking the whole darn thing out only to find that there was no problem in the insulation or enclosure under the sink.
Thanks for taking the time to help!
John
