In some ways the NEF file is the equivalent of a negative, while the JPG file is the equivalent of a print from a negative. However, since digital copies are exact, you don't need the NEF file if you're not going to do anything fancy with the photos. I know people are going to argue with that --- heck, I'm one of them, I shoot only NEFs.
Press the info button to display the information display, then press the i button to put the cursor in the information display. Use the multiselector to highlight the current image quality setting (the topmost item on the right side of the display) and press OK. Select JPG fine and press OK.
For full details, see the "Image Quality and Size" section in the manual (page 50 in my copy).

When you save in Photoshop make sure you select "Baseline ("Standard") on the JPEG options when you save. That should fix the problem for you. It did the trick for My Kodak SV710 digital frame which wasn't displaying images I had edited in photoshop.
Take all the images off the card into a folder.
Put card back in camera and format it.
Run some more shots - we are trying to prove the card is OK.
Meanwhile go on line to www.konvar.com and download PC Inspector. install the programs and run the 'dud' files through it- you may be lucky.
Coming bakc to the Camera - it seems a batch of files corrupted in the taking- which is at fault?
The test above will tell.
